Celebrating Earth Day in Savannah

Savannah is blooming with nature

Savannah sets itself apart from many other big cities around the United States with its beautiful parks and Spanish moss. Throughout all of Savannah, there are 22 incredible parks to be enjoyed by everyone. They are the perfect location for studying, picnics or even just relaxing. Many of the parks also have historical significance; I definitely enjoy learning something when I am out and about in downtown. When not admiring the parks, you are guaranteed to see the substantial amount of Spanish moss hanging from the trees, another great aspect of nature in our city. The moss has amazing benefits of cleaning fog and dust from the air. As for ways we can use it, Spanish moss can be used as an herbal remedy or even a cleaning solution. Aside from this, it is also a beloved part of Savannah that we all love to see.

Savannah has recycling bins

Despite the fact that horses walk the streets of Savannah for tours, the city remains rather clean. I believe this is somewhat due to the fact that Savannah has several places for people to put their trash throughout the city. In addition, there are places to recycle. The recycling bins are not quite as frequently placed around Savannah, but they can be found anywhere along Broughton Street and Bay Street — two of the most touristy streets. I love this aspect of the city since recycling is such an easy way to do something good for the Earth.

Everything you need is within walking distance

Compared to other cities, Savannah’s downtown area is contained within a rather small area. Anything you may need on a given day — a grocery store, a pharmacy, a coffee shop, a place to eat, a convenience store and more — can be found downtown. For SCAD students looking for art supplies, we have many options, including the bookstore and Blick. This is great for the city as it doesn’t call for an immediate need for a car. If you do need to get somewhere a little faster, Savannah supports biking by calling for cars to share the road with cyclists. A no-car lifestyle is strongly supported in Savannah. Not to mention, many enjoy walking around the city in the sunny weather. And of course, you can also fetch a ride in a horse-drawn carriage if you want to capture the historic Savannah experience. Its many alternatives to traveling by car is yet another way that Savannah supports an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

SCAD supports the Earth

Of all the areas of Savannah that SCAD covers, the most earthy and nature-oriented part of the campus has to be the garden located right outside the Hive. In this garden you can find all different types of flowers, vines and herbs, which attract bees and butterflies to the area. SCAD also has a Garden Club so students can contribute to this incredible part of campus. This can be a fun way to get involved with the Earth for Earth Day!
