College Security Report: April 16-20, 2009

April 16

8:58 p.m.— A residence director reported to security that a SCAD student wished to file a complaint against an unidentified Café SCAD employee. She stated that the employee was sitting on the railing outside of her dorm at Weston House as she walked past. The employee watched her go retrieve several items from her vehicle and the greeted her when she returned. She stated that the employee made her feel very uncomfortable and threatened.  Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police response was not needed. Security requested that the resident assistant and residence director reiterate the escort policy to the students, and extra patrols of the area were performed by the Residence Hall Rover.

April 17

2:28 a.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at Oglethorpe House. Security determined that the alarm was a system trouble alarm. The alarm was silenced, but could not be reset.

3:57 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security that there was a back-up phone line trouble alarm activation at the SCAD Equestrian Center. Security responded to the Equestrian Center and patrolled the property. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.

4:05 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security that there was a back-up phone line trouble alarm activation at the Lucas Theatre. Security responded to the Lucas Theatre and patrolled the property. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.

9:29 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at the Student Center. An unknown female student had suffered an asthma attack. EMS was already on scene when security arrived and transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center. Security was not able to get any information on the student.

9:39 p.m.— Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police notified security that they had found some unattended equipment outside of York Hall. Security responded to the scene and spoke with a professor at York Hall. The professor stated that the equipment had accidentally been left there and that he would take possession and will return the equipment to the film department.

10:21 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to the security officer at Bergen Hall that two teenage males attempted to rob her as she exited her car in the rear parking lot of Bergen. She stated that the teenagers, one of them holding a revolver, stepped out from behind the Dumpster and approached her. She shouted for assistance and two students as well as the security officer ran to her assistance, causing the suspects to flee the area. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. Video has been shared with police detectives.

11:30 p.m.— The mother of a SCAD student notified security on April 19 that her son had been the victim of an off-campus assault at 11:30 p.m. April 17. She stated that her son had parked his car near Chatham Square and was walking towards his apartment at on Barnard Street when a young male in a hoodie jumped from the shadows and repeatedly hit him with a blunt object. He was able to fight off the attack and run to his apartment where he called 911. She also stated that a Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police report was taken just after the incident. Security contacted the on-call manager who indicated that he would call the parents.

April 18

4:08 a.m.— Security stopped an unidentified male from gaining entry to Turner House with a falsified SCAD identification card. The fake ID was confiscated and the individual was escorted off of SCAD property.

April 19

3:02 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen his 2008 blue Honda scooter from the bike rack area of Gulfstream Center. He stated that he had left his scooter unsecured at the bike rack at 8 p.m. April 18 and that the scooter was gone when he returned at 3 a.m. April 19. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

8:15 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that he was approached by a man in a blue Dodge Durango SUV while he was walking at Turner and Fahm streets on his way to church. He stated that the man asked him for directions to Oglethorpe Mall. After giving the man directions, the man asked him another question. He was not sure what the man asked, but believes that the man asked for his wallet or cell phone. He stated that as he was asked the second question, the unidentified man reached down by his seat and had a gun. The student ran from the scene to the security station at Turner House. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department was immediately notified and responded to the scene. A police officer stated that since the man did not point the gun at the student, and the student was unsure what the suspect said, an actual crime was not committed. The officer stated that the information on the vehicle would be put out on the radio to see if they could find out what was going on with the gun being in the vehicle. No report was issued.

9:53 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had placed a note on her vehicle threatening to slash her tires if she did not move her vehicle in the Weston/Dyson parking lot. He vehicle was legally parked, but she stated that she had not moved her vehicle in some time due to a dead battery. She did not wish for the police to be notified.

April 20

8:40 a.m.— Security stopped a SCAD student from entering Crites Hall with another student’s ID. He stated that another SCAD student gave him his ID so that he could enter the buildings. Security confiscated the ID and he departed the site.

11:10 a.m.— Security stopped an unidentified female from entering Alexander Hall without a valid student ID. The woman, who refused to identify herself, called dispatch and complained that she was not allowed to sign in with a driver’s license. Dispatch was attempting to explain the access policy and where she could get a replacement card when the woman yelled, “You are ridiculous!” and hung up the phone.

10:06 p.m.— Security responded to a room in Turner House at the request of a residence director in reference to two SCAD students having drug paraphernalia in their dorm. Security met the residence director and Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police at the scene and stood by as police and the residence director investigated the scene. The police found items and drugs (less than 1 oz.) at the scene and took both students into custody. The on-call manager was notified of the situation.

10:31 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at Anderson Hall. Security responded to the scene and met with the Savannah Fire Department that was already on site. Upon investigation the alarm was determined to be false and the system was silenced and reset.
