College Security Report: Feb. 24-March 1, 2009

Feb. 24

9:30 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from an off-campus bike rack on Berrian Street. She stated that she had locked the bike to the rack at 8 p.m. Feb. 22, and that the bike was missing when she returned at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police issued a report.

10:50 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Montgomery Hall. A SCAD student was complaining of dizziness and numbness in her hands. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial Hospital.

Feb. 25

2:20 p.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident at the Dyson/Weston lot involving two SCAD students. No injuries were reported. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene and issued a report.

5:30 p.m.— A SCAD professor reported to security that his brown jacket, a Cannon camera, a pair of sunglasses and a calendar book were stolen from the basement in Anderson Hall. He stated that he had last seen the items at 11 a.m. Feb. 25.

Feb. 26

7:55 a.m.— Security was notified that there was graffiti in the north side elevator of Turner House. Security responded to the scene and took pictures of the damage.

9:47 a.m.— Security was notified that someone had set fire to a memo that was posted on the second floor restroom door at Turner House. Security responded to the scene and took pictures of the damage.

6:10 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Alexander Hall. A SCAD student was complaining of chest pains. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial hospital.

7:04 p.m.— Security responded to noise complaint at Turner House. Upon arrival, it was determined that the noise was being caused by a Turner House Poetry Slam event being held at Turner House. Security notified the resident director of the complaint.

8:35 p.m.— Several students attempted to enter Eckburg Hall with food and drink. Security notified the students that there was a no food or drink policy at Eckburg and the students departed. Three hours later, a professor came to the security desk and stated that one of the drinks was hers and that she and her students were upset that security would not allow drinks and food inside the building.

7:40 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Turner House near the Coastal Georgia parking lot. A SCAD student was staggering and falling down and appeared to be intoxicated. A resident assistant and resident director were notified of the incident. EMS and the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene. After being evaluated by EMS, the student was escorted to her room by the resident assistant.

Feb. 27

12:42 a.m.— Security responded to a smoke alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. The alarm was determined to be false and the system was silenced and reset.

2:04 a.m.— Security discovered graffiti on the left side of Café SCAD near the kitchen entrance and Dumpsters. Security took pictures of the damage.

3:40 a.m.— A SCAD student called security and stated that there were five men in the rear of the Weston/Dyson parking lot shouting and screaming. Security responded to the scene, but the individuals were already gone. The Residence Hall Rover was instructed to conduct extra patrols of the area.

11:30 a.m.— An operations manager responded to Bergen Hall where a SCAD student was giving the building security officer a hard time regarding entry procedure. She did not have a valid student ID and was unhappy that security would not let her in the building. The student had departed prior to the operations manager’s arrival.

2:30 p.m.— On Feb. 27 a SCAD student reported to security that she believed that someone had stolen her wallet while she was at an off-campus house party. She stated that the wallet went missing between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. She said she did not want police response, but she just needed a report to get a replacement ID.

4:10 p.m.— Security responded to an elevator entrapment at York Hall. An IT specialist had become trapped in the elevator on the second floor. Atlantic Coast Elevator Services responded to the scene and were able to remove the man from the elevator.

6:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that she had accidentally broke a third floor window pane at Eckburg Hall with a mannequin. Security notified maintenance and janitorial services for clean up.

8:28 p.m.— Security responded to an elevator entrapment at the Student Center. An evening coordinator had become trapped in the elevator, but was able to free herself by pushing the doors open. Security was unable to contact Atlantic Coast Elevator Services.

Feb. 28

2:15 a.m.— Security discovered the front door to the Red Gallery to be unsecured. The alarm system was armed. Security secured the door.

3:39 a.m.— A SCAD student entered Oglethorpe House and notified security that he had been chased by four men in a pickup truck. The pickup left the scene when they saw security. He stated that he was walking from a friend’s house on Broughton Street back to his car that was parked at Oglethorpe House. The truck approached him at the corner of Jefferson Street and Oglethorpe Avenue and followed him to Oglethorpe House. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene, but did not issue a report number.

10:39 a.m.— A resident assistant notified security that he wanted to file a vehicle theft report with SCAD security. He stated that his vehicle had been stolen by his weekend guest. An operations manager spoke with him by phone and he then stated that he was unsure if his friend took the car or if someone else had stolen it, but he did not want the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police notified yet. He called security back a few minutes later and stated that his car was definitely stolen and that he needed the police. The operations manager called the police and then responded to the scene. Upon arrival at the scene, the resident assistant asked if security could cancel the police response because he had just spoken with his friend and that his friend had his vehicle. Security notified the police that they could cancel response.

11:51 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at River Club. A staff member stated that a student had suffered a seizure and that she had already called EMS. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial Hospital.

12:08 p.m.— A resident director notified security that someone had broken the glass out of the fire extinguisher box on the first floor of Turner House and had discharged the extinguisher. Security notified janitorial services for clean up.

11:03 p.m.— A SCAD student notified security that her roommate had been talking about suicide for the last couple of weeks. Security attempted to call the on-call counselor, but received no immediate response. Security then called the resident director who stated that they would talk to the roommate. The on-call counselor called 45 minutes later and was informed of the situation.

March 1

12:50 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her laptop had been stolen from a room in Eichberg Hall. She stated that she had stepped out of the room for a few minutes and that the computer was gone when she returned. She stated that she did not want the police notified.

1:45 p.m.— A SCAD employee notified security that a man entered the back door of Hamilton Hall and refused to show his ID. Security responded to the scene, but the individual had already departed the scene. The employee stated that the man entered the building and used the men’s restroom. Upon leaving the restroom, the man was challenged by the employee. The man again refused to identify himself and ran out of the building. The employee stated that she believes that the individual may have been student, but she was not entirely sure.

6:47 p.m.— Security discovered the front door to Club SCAD was unsecured. Security determined that the door’s magnetic locks were not securing the door properly. The door was dead-bolted and a work order was issued for repair.
