College Security Report: Jan. 20-Feb. 1, 2010

Jan. 20

10:50 p.m.— Security responded to a call from the Boundary Village booth officer that a smoke alarm was active in a room. Security spoke with a SCAD student who stated that she was cooking in the room and smoke activated the alarm. The security officer was able to reset and silence the alarm from the Boundary Village booth. Sonitrol alarm company did not contact security.

Jan. 21

1:16 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security of a trouble alarm on the fifth floor of Turner House. Sonitrol stated that it was not a fire alarm. Security responded to Turner House and checked the fire panel. No alarm was indicated on the panel and Sonitrol stated that they would place a work order to have the system checked.

10:30 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at a room in Anderson Hall. A SCAD student stated that she had cut her finger with an X-Acto knife while working on a school project. EMS responded to the scene, but the student declined treatment. She stated that she would seek medical attention at the student health clinic.

occurred 10:55 a.m., reported 6:30 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at a room in Barnard Village. A SCAD student stated that she had fallen on the outside steps at Crites Hall. She stated that she had taken herself to Student Health Services and had also gotten x-rays taken at Memorial University Medical Center. The on-call manager was notified of the incident.

8 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Boundary Village. No one was at the call box when security arrived.

8:01 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Old Arch. No one was at the call box when security arrived.

9:50 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation with evacuation at Boundary Hall. Upon investigation it was determined that an ABM janitorial services employee had accidentally activated a pull station. The Savannah Fire Department responded to the scene and gave instructions to security to silence and reset the alarm.

Jan. 22

12:07 a.m.— A residence director reported to security that the glass fire extinguisher door near a Turner House room had been broken. Security arranged for the glass to be removed.

12:15 a.m.— Security responded to a fire exit door alarm at Turner Annex. Security determined that a student had accidentally opened the door to exit.

8:45 a.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at Keys Hall. The Savannah Fire Department was already on site prior to security’s arrival. A SCAD employee silenced the alarm at the fire department’s instruction and stated that she would notify Sonitrol alarm company of the problem.

2:16 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at Boundary Hall. Security determined that the alarm was caused by smoke coming from a malfunctioning piece of equipment. The alarm was silenced and reset.

7:08 p.m.— Security responded to a medical incident at Arnold Hall. A SCAD student stated that she was sitting in the lobby of Arnold Hall when the chair she was in broke, causing her to fall to the floor. She stated that she was uninjured and did not need medical attention and departed the site.

7:18 p.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm activation at Morris Hall. A patrol of the building was conducted and all appeared to be normal. The alarm was silenced, reset and placed on the maintenance log.

8:06 p.m.— Security responded to student lock-out at a room in Boundary Village. The security director was notified and dispatched a locksmith to the scene.

8:15 p.m.— A resident assistant reported to security that she had discovered drug paraphernalia in a room in Boundary Village during a routine room search. Security responded to the scene and observed a water pipe, rolling paper and a lighter belonging to a SCAD student. The residence director and Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene. A police officer discovered two bags of marijuana at the scene and placed the student under arrest. The student was transported by the police for processing.

11:10 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Bergen Hall. A patrol of the area was conducted, but no one was observed in the vicinity of the call box.

Jan. 23

2:40 a.m.— A residence director reported to security that she had discovered a bong in a room in Turner House. She stated that the bong, which belongs to two SCAD students, was being used for regular tobacco and not marijuana. She stated that she did not want police response and she allowed the students to keep the bong.

3:08 a.m.— Security responded to a motion alarm activation at Hamilton Hall. A patrol of the facility was conducted and the alarm was determined to be false.

3:26 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that his bike had been stolen from the bike rack at Oglethorpe House. The student stated that he had secured the bike to the rack at 9:30 p.m. Jan. 22, and that the bike was missing when he returned at 3:26 a.m. Jan. 23. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

10:29 p.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident at Oglethorpe House between a student and the parent of a student. There were no injuries reported. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

11:44 p.m.— Security responded to a medical at the Jen Library. Security determined that a SCAD student was having an emotional emergency and the on-call counselor was contacted. The student and the counselor were transported by security to Memorial University Medical Center.

Jan. 24

3:32 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at a room in Boundary Village. A SCAD student stated that she was feeling ill and had been vomiting since 5 p.m. Jan. 23. The residence director and EMS were notified and the student was transported to Candler Hospital by EMS.

1:55 p.m.— A SCAD parent called dispatch and stated that his son was sick in his room in Weston House. The parent stated that his son needed medical attention, but that he did not wish EMS to be notified. Security informed the residence director of the situation and the residence director made arrangements for a cab to take the student to Urgent Care.

Jan. 25

8:30 a.m.— Security responded to an trouble alarm activation at Pepe Hall. A patrol of the building was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered, but the alarm was unable to be reset. Sonitrol alarm company was notified of the issue and stated that they would have someone check the system.

reported 12:20 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that she had two pens, valued at $200, stolen while she was working in the computer labs at Dyson and Montgomery Hall. The student stated that on Jan. 16 she had been working at the Montgomery Hall lab and noticed that her pen was missing when she got home. On Jan. 24, she stated that she was working at the Dyson Lab and noticed that her pen was missing when she got home. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene but did not issue a report. The student is requesting that the security tapes be watched to see who took her pens.

12:45 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had smashed his driver’s side rear window. He stated that he had parked the vehicle in the Gulfstream lot at 10 a.m. Jan. 25, and that the vehicle was damaged when he returned to the lot at 12:45 p.m. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. Nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle.

occurred at 1:30 p.m., reported at 4:30 p.m.— Security was notified of a minor vehicle accident at Hamilton Hall involving two SCAD students. Security responded to a medical call at a room in Barnard Village. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene, but did not issue a report because both vehicles had been moved. One student requested that the security cameras be viewed to determine who was at fault.

5:25 p.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security of a smoke alarm activation at a room in Lai Wa Hall. Security responded to the scene and found nothing out of the ordinary. The alarm was silenced and reset.

6 p.m.— Security responded to a low battery alarm at a room in Barnard Village. The alarm was placed on the maintenance log.

7:30 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Boundary Hall. Security met the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and determined that the alarm was caused by students cooking in the dorm. The alarm was silenced and reset.

Jan. 26

7:50 a.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident at the back of the Oglethorpe House parking lot involving a SCAD student and a non-SCAD person. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were notified and responded to the incident. The police generated a report. Photos where taken of the incident and there were no injuries reported.

10:30 a.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident at the Montgomery Hall parking lot involving two SCAD students. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were notified and responded to the incident. The police generated a report. Photos where taken of the incident and there were no injuries reported.

Jan. 27

9:30 a.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident involving a SCAD bus at the SCAD Café in the Weston lot. A First Transit driver stated that she was pulling the bus over and she misjudged the distance to the awning. The bus struck the awning causing a dent and scrapes above the passenger door to the bus.

11:33 a.m.— Security responded to a smoke alarm activation at Pulaski House. The Savannah Fire Department was on site and determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm. Security silenced and reset the alarm.

7:28 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that his bike had been stolen from the north side of Arnold Hall. He stated that he had locked his bike to the rack at 4:18 p.m. on Jan. 27, and that the bike was missing when he returned at 7:10 p.m. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

Jan. 28

12:33 a.m.— Security was notified of a vehicle leaking fluid at Turner Annex. The ABM janitorial services supervisor arranged clean-up of the fluid.

3 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation with evacuation at Weston House. It was determined that the alarm was caused by maintenance working on the HVAC system. The alarm was silenced and reset.

8:20 p.m.— Security discovered a broken window at a room in Eckburg Hall. Security placed a work order for the item on the daily maintenance log.

occurred 8:20 p.m. Jan. 28, reported 9:30 p.m. Jan. 29— Two SCAD professors reported to security that they had possibly seen individuals involved in a carjacking at Arnold Hall. The professors stated that, as they were leaving an event at Arnold Hall, they had witnessed three young men hanging out near 35th and Drayton streets. The individuals appeared to approach them, but eventually drew back. Both professors gave description identical to those given for the carjacking report.

8:30 p.m.— A SCAD professor reported to security that three males had approached him as he was entering his vehicle parked on 35th Street at Arnold Hall. The males approached him from Thomas Park and asked the professor if he had the time. Once the individuals were next to the professor, one of the males pulled a revolver and told the professor to empty his pockets and get out of the car. The individuals then fled the scene in the professor’s 1999 Ford Explorer. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

11:53 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Arnold Hall. A security patrol was conducted of the area, but no one was in the vicinity of the call box. The alarm activated again at 1:03 a.m., 1:05 a.m. and 1:31 a.m. Patrols were conducted each time with negative results.

Jan. 29

2:30 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that a white object struck her car while she was driving under the Turner bridge, causing a dent to the hood of her vehicle. Upon investigation it was determined that the object was a Styrofoam cup. The student declined to have the police called.

3:15 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that he had been mugged off campus near the Greyhound Station. The student stated that he was walking back to Weston/Dyson after attending an off-campus party when he was approached by three males. One of the individuals asked him for his wallet and implied that he had a gun in the front pouch of his hoodie. The student gave the suspects $60 in cash, but was able to keep his wallet. The suspects then fled on foot down Fahm Street towards Yamacraw Village. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

7:22 p.m.— Security discovered an unsecured door at Casey House. Security secured the door.

Jan. 30

12:30 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Barnard Village. A SCAD student stated that he had tried to pet a stray dog at Barnard Village when the dog bit him, causing a scratch to his hand. Security notified EMS, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and Animal Control. The student declined medical attention, but was told by EMS that it would be a good idea to get a tetanus shot. Animal Control was able to remove the dog from SCAD property.

5:45 p.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by students cooking in the dorm. The alarm was not able to be reset at the panel or in the dorm. Sonitrol alarm company was notified and sent a technician to look at the system.

8 p.m.— Security discovered graffiti in three locations behind Bobbie’s Diner. A maintenance request was issued for clean-up.

8:09 p.m.— Security observed a SCAD student attempt to enter the Abercorn Terrace dorms with a can of beer. The residence director was notified and responded to the scene. The residence director had the student pour the beer down a drain.

Jan. 31

2:30 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to the security officer at Turner House that he had been mugged at Forsyth Park. The student stated that he was walking down the Drayton Street side of Forsyth Park while returning from a party on River Street when he was approached by three males. One of the males struck him in the back of the head with a gun and demanded his wallet. No money was taken. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to Turner House and issued a report. The student declined medical attention.

5:16 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at a room in Turner House. A SCAD student had reportedly taken 50 Advil pills with alcohol. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center.

Feb. 1

4:15 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to the security officer at Boundary Hall that he had been mugged while walking under the Turner bridge. The student stated that he was walking to Boundary Hall from Dyson lab when a male put a gun to the back of his head and demanded his wallet. The suspect took the wallet, $10 and his jump drive. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
