College Security Report: July 13-26, 2009

July 13

10:55 a.m.—Security was notified that there was a stray dog in Arnold Hall. Security responded to the scene and was able to get the dog to exit through the front door of the building. The dog had entered the building as students were entering and exiting the front door.

1:33 p.m.—Security observed a woman sitting on the sidewalk near Keys Hall. She said she had fallen on the sidewalk. EMS responded to the scene at the request of the woman and she was transported Memorial Health University Medical Center.

3:30 p.m.—A student reported to security that someone had stolen her bike from her off-campus residence on East Gaston Street. She said she last saw her bike on July 1 when she locked it on her porch. When she went to get her bike at 9 a.m. on July 13, she noticed that the cable lock had been cut and the bike was gone. Police responded to dispatch and issued a report.

7 p.m.—Security received a call box activation alarm at the Old Arch. Security responded to the scene, but did not find anyone in the vicinity of the call box.

July 14

10:10 a.m.—Security responded to an alarm activation at Turner House. Upon investigation it was determined that a worker from a roofing contractor had accidentally damaged a sprinkler head in the attic near a room, causing it to break and dispense water. SCAD maintenance, Savannah Fire Department and Sonitrol responded to the scene. The water and electric service to Turner House was shut off. Damage to the building was still being assessed at the time of this report.

3:30 p.m.—Security responded to a medial call at Ex Libris. A student said she had passed out due to low blood sugar, but was since feeling better. She did not want EMS response and was transported to her residence by a friend.

July 16

3 p.m.—A student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from an off-campus bike rack on East Hull Street. She said she had locked the bike to the rack early in the morning of July 13 and that the bike was gone when she returned at 11 a.m. on the same day. Police responded to dispatch and issued a report.

4:30 p.m.—Security responded to medical call at Café SCAD. A food service employee was suffering from heat exhaustion type symptoms. EMS responded to the scene and transported the employee to Memorial Hospital.

5:15 p.m.—Security responded to a suspicious odor call at Clinard Hall. Upon investigation it was determined that the smell was coming from the air conditioning unit. Maintenance was notified of the situation.

6:32 p.m.—Security responded to an alarm activation at Café SCAD. Upon arrival at Café SCAD, the alarm panel had already been silenced and reset by the maintenance department. Savannah Fire Department responded to the scene and determined the alarm was false.

July 18

2:41 p.m.—Security was notified that the second floor men’s room at the Jen library was flooding due to an overflowing toilet. Maintenance was notified of the problem and responded to the scene.

July 19

1:30 a.m.—The downtown area experienced a power outage affecting Oglethorpe House and Eichberg Hall. Security confirmed with the City of Savannah that the issue was not a SCAD issue, but an issue with Georgia Power. Security checked all affected building to make sure they were secured. Power was restored at 4 a.m. and a second check of the buildings was conducted. No problems were reported.

3 p.m.—A resident director reported to security that a Rising Star student stated that, as she was taking pictures and speaking on her phone in Spanish, and an unknown male approached her from behind and yelled “go back where you came from” and then punched her in the back. The student did not want to file a police report and said she did not need EMS response.

11:51 p.m.—Security responded to a call box activation at Bergen Hall. Upon investigation, no one was discovered in the area of the call box and the alarm was determined to false.

July 20

2:35 a.m.—Sonitrol reported to dispatch that there were multiple communication failure alarms on campus. The buildings affected were Hamilton Hall, Eckburg Hall and Propes Hall. Security responded to the buildings and checked the fire panels at each location. Each panel appeared normal and had no active alarms.

8:02 a.m.—Security responded to a call box alarm activation at Old Arch. Upon investigation it was determined that no one was in the vicinity of the call box and that the alarm was false.

4:20 p.m.—Security responded to medical call at Physical Resources. An officer observed a contractor fall while stepping up on a curb, injuring his left knee and leg. The contractor stated that he did not need EMS attention.

4:45 p.m.—Security responded to vehicle collision at Boundary Hall involving a pickup truck that struck a fire hydrant. Savannah Fire Department was contacted and responded to the scene to assist with removing the truck from the hydrant.

July 21

8 a.m.—Security stopped a female student from entering Arnold Hall with an improper ID. The ID card being used did not belong to the individual and had an invalid sticker. The individual refused to identify herself and proceeded to enter the building and go to room 204.

9:18 p.m.—Security responded to an elevator entrapment at the student center involving 10 students. The elevator technician was notified and arrived on site less than 15 minutes later to remove the students from the elevator. A resident director was on site at the time of the incident and notified the on-call counselor.

9:35 p.m.—Sonitrol notified security of an alarm activation at Forsyth Hall and stated that they had already notified the fire department. Security responded to the scene and met with the fire department. The alarm was determined to be false.

July 22

9 a.m.—A student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from her off-campus residence on Barnard Street. She said she had last seen the bike when she locked it in her backyard on the morning of July 17 and that she noticed it missing on July 22. Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

11:15 a.m.—A SCAD student was stopped at the entrance of Arnold Hall by security for having no SCAD ID. She stated that she had paid a lot of money to go to school and she was not going to miss class. She entered the building even after being told that she would not be allowed entry without an ID.

2 p.m.—Security stopped a individual from entering Arnold Hall with an ID that had a fake summer sticker. When stopped by security, the individual grabbed the ID and ran into the building. Security was unable to locate the student, but a professor identified the student.

6:30 p.m.—Sonitrol notified security of a pull station alarm activation at Forsyth Hall and stated that they had already notified the fire department. Security responded to the scene and met with fire department personnel.  The alarm was determined to be false and that a pull station had not been activated.

July 23

2:02 a.m.—Dispatch received a call from a student’s mother stating that she had recently texted her daughter and had gotten no response. The parent requested that someone check on her daughter and make sure that she was OK.  Security contacted the resident director and was able to get the student’s room number. A supervisor responded to the room and, after making contact with the student, asked her to call her mother.

July 24

1:28 p.m.—Security responded to an elevator entrapment at York Hall. An employee, stuck in the elevator, escaped from the elevator prior to security’s arrival at the scene.

July 25

4:05 a.m.—Sonitrol notified security that they believed that there was a problem with the audio in the alarm system at Hamilton Hall. Security responded to Hamilton Hall and could not find anything wrong with the panel or within the building. Sonitrol was called back and the operator stated that they believed that the problem was with the phone line.

1:26 p.m.—A resident director reported to security that there was a mouse in her room at Turner Annex. Dispatch informed the appropriate personnel.
