College Security Report: May 10-17, 2010

May 10

2:31 a.m.— A SCAD student’s purse was recovered by a Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police officer. The officer found the student’s purse inside the vehicle of a suspect he had arrested.

May 11

5:07 p.m.— Security was notified of an off-campus vehicle accident at Orchard and Montgomery streets involving a SCAD student and a non-SCAD vehicle. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. No injuries were reported.

5:10 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm.

7:09 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm.

9:50 p.m.— A SCAD professor reported to security that she had been verbally harassed by two men near a store at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Indian Street. The store clerk had already called the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police regarding the men and the professor did not want to pursue the matter further.

May 12

4 p.m.— A SCAD student notified security that her vehicle had been broken into while it was parked at the Telfair soccer field. The student stated that she parked her car at the soccer field at 2 p.m., and that when she returned to the vehicle at 4 p.m. she noticed that the driver’s side window had been smashed and that her purse (containing her license and credit card) was missing. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and issued a report.

7:23 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security determined that the alarm was false and that there was no smoke or haze present.

9:46 p.m.— Security discovered that the fire extinguisher casing on the third floor of Montgomery Hall had been damaged. Pictures were taken and the item was placed on the maintenance list for repair.

10:30 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at a room in Turner House. A SCAD student stated that she had accidentally caught her finger in the door as it swung shut, injuring her finger. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center.

May 13

1:40 p.m.— A SCAD professor notified security that at 2 p.m. May 12, a SCAD student had received a shock while plugging her cell phone into a wall socket at Wallin Hall. The professor stated that the student was transported to the hospital by a friend and had later informed him that she was feeling better.

10:44 p.m.— Security discovered that the fire extinguisher casing on the first floor of Montgomery Hall had been damaged. Pictures were taken and the item was placed on the maintenance list for repair.

May 14

No activity was reported.

May 15

2 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that his headphones had been stolen from Eichberg Hall. The student stated that he had left the headphones on his desk in the graduate student area at 9:50 p.m. on May 14, and that the headphones were gone when he returned to the area at 2 p.m. May 15.

3:33 p.m.— Security responded to Pepe Hall dyeing room for a report of smoke. Upon arrival security noticed that one of the dryers was warm to the touch and had charred fabric and water inside. Security determined that the fabric belonged to a SCAD student and had accidentally burned some fabric.

11:45 p.m.— On May 16, a SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen her purse while she was at an off-campus party on May 15. The student stated that she had left the purse on a sofa at 11 p.m., and that it was gone when she went to retrieve it at 11:45 p.m. The student also stated that someone had tried to use her credit card five times since the purse had been stolen. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

May 16

1:06 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security determined that the alarm was false, but was not able to reset the system. Sonitrol alarm company was notified and a work order was placed to have the system checked.

3:30 p.m.— A SCAD professor dropped off a set of keys to the security desk at Boundary Hall and stated that he had taken the keys from SCAD student whom he believed to be intoxicated. Moments later, the student left the premises on foot crying and staggering, but would not stop when asked to do so by security. Security contacted the on-call manager and informed her of the situation.

9:41 p.m.— Security discovered the odor of gas at Oglethorpe House. The gas company was notified by security and a gas tech responded to the scene and discovered that one of the pilot lights at JO’s Café had blown out. The pilot light was re-lit and the tech stated that the problem had been solved.

May 17

12:25 p.m.— Security responded to a call box alarm activation at the Old Arch. A patrol of the area was conducted and no one was discovered in the vicinity of the call box.

10:45 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that he had accidentally hit the bumper of another vehicle while he was exiting the Hamilton Hall parking lot in a U-Haul truck. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

1:10 p.m.— A SCAD student notified security that two bikes had been stolen from her off-campus location on West 31st Street. Both bikes were unsecured and had been left on her back porch. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

2:45 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had entered her vehicle and went through her things while her vehicle was parked at the Barnard and Liberty lot between May 14 to May 15. The student could not remember if she locked her vehicle and there were no signs of forced entry. The student stated that she did not think anything was missing and that she did not want to file a report with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police.
