College Security report: May 11-29, 2012

May 11

 

4 a.m. — Security observed a verbal altercation at Turner and Fahm streets involving a group of SCAD students. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and handled the incident. No arrests were made.

9:49 p.m. — Security discovered the front door of Keys Hall was unsecured. Security patrolled the building and secured the door.

9:55 p.m. — Security responded to an elevator entrapment at Turner House (south elevator). Atlantic Coast Elevator responded to the scene and released one student from the elevator.

10:25 p.m. — Security responded to an elevator entrapment at Turner House (west elevator). Atlantic Coast Elevator responded to the scene and released one student from the elevator.

11:10 p.m. — Security responded to a room in Turner House in reference to students burning incense in the dorm. The residence director conducted a search of the room and discovered that the smoke detector had been covered with a plastic bag and the room smelled heavily of incense.

 

May 12

6:44 p.m. — Security received a call from a male student claiming that his girlfriend was threatening to harm herself. Security contacted the female student who stated that she was fine, but was at Amtrak waiting on a train to take her home. Security notified the residence director and on-call counselor.

 

May 13

1:40 a.m. — Security responded to a call box alarm activation at Bergen Hall. The alarm was determined to be false.

3:58 a.m. — Security discovered graffiti damage on the south side of Crites Hall. Maintenance was notified of the damage.

9:07 — Security received a call from a female SCAD student stating that she was being harassed by a male SCAD student. The female student stated that she was safe, but had been receiving unwanted attention and text messages from a male student. The female student did not want police response nor did she wish to speak with an on-call counselor. She stated that she wanted the Student Conduct Department to be aware of the issue.

10:31 p.m. — A female SCAD student approached security and stated that she was very upset because her boyfriend had just broken up with her. The student stated that she did not need to speak with the on-call counselor and that she would just go to her dorm to sleep.

 

May 14

No activity was reported.

 

May 15

1:25 a.m. — Security responded to a trouble alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. The alarm was determined to be false, but the system would not reset. A work order was placed to have the system serviced.

5 a.m. — Security responded to a medical call at Abercorn Terrace involving a SCAD student who had taken an overdose of Tylenol. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center.

7:04 p.m. — Security received a call stating that an emergency exit door at Poetter Hall was unsecured. Security responded to the scene and secured the door. It was determined that the door had been left unsecured by the construction crew working at Poetter Hall.

 

May 16

1:20 p.m. — A SCAD professor reported to security that a homeless man had entered Gulfstream and was wandering around. Security responded to the scene, but the man was off-site prior to security’s arrival.

4 p.m. — A SCAD student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from Arnold Hall on Mazy 15. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

7:41 p.m. — Security discovered the north side door to Forsyth House was unsecured. The door was determined to be not swinging shut properly. Security secured the door and placed the item on the maintenance log.

9:45 p.m. — A non-SCAD individual struck a wall at Crites Hall with his vehicle. No damage was done to the wall.

 

May 17

11 a.m. — A SCAD student reported to security that her car had been struck by an unknown vehicle while it was parked at Morris Hall. The student stated that she would supply security with a police report number after she spoke with police.

noon — Security responded to a medical call involving a student who had injured her ankle at Hamilton Hall. The student was taken to the SCAD clinic by a fellow student.

1:43 p.m. — A SCAD student reported to security that the grounds crew had kicked up a stone with a lawnmower that had cracked his rear window at Dyson House. A SCAD manager was notified of the damage.

6:03 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. The alarm was determined to be false and the system was silenced and reset.

6:55 p.m. — Security discovered the 34th Street side maintenance door at Arnold Hall was unsecured. An interior patrol of the area was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered. Security closed the door, but was unable to secure it because they did not have the key. Extra patrols of the area were ordered until the door could be secured in the morning.

10:51 p.m. — Security responded to a tamper alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. The alarm was determined to be false. Stanly Alarm Systems was notified of the issue.

11:50 p.m. — Security responded to a trouble alarm at Lai Wa Hall. The alarm was silenced, but could not be reset. Maintenance was notified of the issue.

 

May 18

1:18 a.m. — Security responded to Oglethorpe House in reference to an intoxicated student who was lying under the Oglethorpe House sign. The student stated that he had drank too much and was waiting for his girlfriend to return to Oglethorpe House so that he could stay with her. After being informed that he could not spend the night at Oglethorpe House, the student called his roommate and arranged a ride back to his dorm.

2:40 a.m. — Security responded to Turner Boulevard in reference to a SCAD student that claimed to have been sprayed by pepper spray by an unknown man. EMS and Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and allowed the student to return to her dorm. No suspect was located and no report was issued by police.

3:43 a.m. — Security observed four individuals on the roof of Poetter Hall. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were contacted and responded to the scene. The four individuals (three students and one non-student) were determined to have been drinking on the roof. Two students were cited for underage drinking. No arrests were made and SCMPD allowed the individuals to return home on foot.

3:45 a.m. — Security responded to a room in Turner House in reference to an intoxicated student who was passed out and unresponsive. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center.

11:18 a.m. — A SCAD employee reported to security that an iPad was missing from Charlton Hall. The iPad was last seen at 5:30 p.m. May 11. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

4:17 p.m. — A SCAD student entered Gulfstream without showing SCAD ID. When approached by the security officer on duty, the student stated that she did not have an ID and refused to get a new ID because there were only two weeks left in school. The student then walked past the officer and entered Gulfstream.

4:58 p.m. — Security discovered the second floor emergency door was unsecured at Poetter Hall. A patrol of the facility was conducted and then security secured the door.

5:29 p.m. — Security discovered the rear maintenance door to Morris Hall was unsecured. Maintenance was notified of the discrepancy.

 

May 19

12:54 a.m. — Security discovered the rear stage door to Trustees Theater was unsecured. Security patrolled the building and secured the door.

1:10 p.m. — Security responded to an elevator entrapment at Turner House. Atlantic Coast Elevator responded to the scene and the student was released from the elevator.

6:02 p.m. — Security discovered the front door to Old Arch was unsecured. Security patrolled the building and secured the door.

8:40 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. Upon arrival at the scene, there was no active alarm and no smoke or haze present.

 

May 20

1:18 a.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. The alarm was determined to be false and was silenced and reset.

4:04 a.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. The alarm was determined to be false and was silenced and reset.

7:54 a.m. — Security discovered that the letters on the Oglethorpe House sign had been rearranged and was now displaying a vulgar message. Security removed the letters from the sign.

6:08 p.m. — Security was notified of an alligator sitting on the banks of the canal near Dyson House. Animal control responded to the scene and removed the alligator.

9:05 p.m. — A SCAD student notified that they had witnessed a hit-and-run vehicle accident in the parking lot of Gulfstream. The owner of the damaged vehicle and police were notified. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police issued a report.

10:10 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm at Poetter Hall. The alarm was determined to be false, but would not reset. The item was placed on the maintenance work order list.

 

May 21

12:50 p.m. — A SCAD student reported that his bike had been stolen from the front of Oglethorpe House sometime between 4 a.m. and 4 p.m. May 20. The bike was not registered and the student did not want to report the incident to police.

4:30 p.m. — A SCAD student attempted to enter Wallin Hall using an ID belonging to another SCAD student. The other student was contacted and confirmed that he had lent his ID to the first student. College Access procedures were explained to both students and the other student was told that he could pick up his ID at dispatch.

8 p.m. — A SCAD student reported to security that her car had been vandalized while she was parked at Ex Libris. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

10:54 p.m. — Security discovered the front door to Keys Hall was unsecured. Security patrolled the building and secured the door.

 

May 22

11:35 a.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. The alarm was determined to be a false alarm and was reset.

7:00 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Pulaski House. Security met Savannah Fire Department personnel at the scene and it was determined that the alarm had been caused by a student cooking in the dorm.

11:21 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Pulaski House. Security met Savannah Fire Department personnel at the scene and it was determined that the alarm had been caused by a student cooking in the dorm.

11:50 p.m. — Security responded to a medical call at Turner House involving a student that had dropped an object on her foot injuring her toe. The residence director arranged for the student to be transported to Memorial University Medical Center via a cab.

 

May 23

5:33 p.m. — Security discovered the front door to Poetter Hall was unsecured. Security conducted a patrol of the building and secured the door.

7:38 p.m. — Security discovered the maintenance door at Arnold Hall was unsecured. Security notified maintenance of the open door.

8:10 p.m. — Security received a call from a student requesting to speak with an on-call counselor. Security called the counselor and passed on the student’s contact information.

10:45 p.m. — Security responded to a tampered alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. The student occupying the room stated that she had removed the detector because it would not stop beeping. Maintenance was notified of the incident.

 

May 24

12:04 a.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at Alexander Hall. The alarm silenced and restored itself prior to security’s arrival.

1:08 a.m. — A SCAD student reported to security that an unknown man had come to his room and started threatening him. The individual had departed the scene prior to security’s arrival. Another SCAD student was at the scene when security arrived and stated that he had received a call from the unknown man stating that an unknown student had allowed him to enter the facility. The student did not want police notified and did not wish to pursue the matter further.

10:37 a.m. — Security discovered the front door to Evans Hall was unsecured. Security conducted a patrol of the building and secured the door.

4:40 p.m. — Security responded to a smoke alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. The student occupying the room stated that the alarm had activated for no reason and there was no smoke or haze present. The alarm was silenced and reset.

11:15 p.m. — Security discovered the front door to Keys Hall was unsecured. A patrol of the building was conducted and security secured the door.

11:30 p.m. — Security discovered the maintenance storage room on the rear side of Morris Hall was unsecured. Maintenance was notified of the open door.

 

May 25

1:15 a.m. — Security responded to Turner Annex in reference to a cracked window on the right door to the east entrance of Turner Annex. Maintenance was notified of the damage.

1:20 a.m. — Security discovered the east emergency fire exit door to Turner Annex was unsecured. Security secured the door.

2:24 a.m. — Security discovered the rear door to Old Arch was unsecured. Security patrolled the building and secured the door.

4:40 a.m. — Security was notified of a student arrest at Oglethorpe Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The student was arrested for underage drinking and possession of a fake ID. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police issued a report.

11:30 p.m. — Security received a call from the parent of a SCAD student requesting assistance in finding his son who was not answering his phone and had not contacted his parents in several days. Security was able to contact the student at 1:30 p.m. The student promised to call his parents.

7:05 p.m. — Security discovered that the front door of Poetter Hall was not secured by deadbolt, although the door access system was keeping the door secured. Security secured the deadbolt, but the deadbolt was found to be unsecured again at 10 p.m.

8:24 p.m. — Security discovered the exterior recycling door and the exterior maintenance door to Arnold Hall were unsecured. Maintenance was notified of the unsecured doors.

8:50 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Boundary Village. It was determined that the alarm had been caused by a student cooking in the dorm. The alarm was silenced and reset.

8:56 p.m. — Security responded to a medical call at the Student Center involving a student who had injured his leg while performing a show. EMS responded to the scene and was transported to Memorial University Medical Center.

9:05 p.m. — Security discovered the front entrance to Keys Hall was unsecured. Security found one staff member still working in the building. Security informed the staff member that they were going to secure the door and asked her to leave via the ground floor exit.

11:54 p.m. — Security responded to a room of Turner House at the request of a residence director. The residence director stated that she had smelled incense outside the room and requested security presence while she questioned the occupants of the room. A visual inspection of the room was conducted and a homemade pipe, empty bottle of vodka and a half empty bottle of beer were found. It was also discovered that the smoke detector had been covered with a plastic bag. The students admitted that the pipe was used for smoking marijuana, but that they had no marijuana in their possession. The contraband was thrown in the Dumpster and students were told that the incident would be reported to student conduct.

 

May 26

2:00 p.m. — A SCAD student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard side of Eichberg Hall between 3 a.m. and 2 p.m. on May 26. The student did not want the police notified.

7:00 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at Wallin Hall. The alarm was silenced and reset.

8:10 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at a room of Abercorn Terrace. The occupant of the dorm stated that the alarm went off for no reason and there was no sign of smoke or haze. The alarm was silenced and reset.

 

May 27

1:36 a.m. — A SCAD student reported to security that she had encountered an aggressive panhandler in the area of Alice House. The unknown man had departed the scene prior to security’s arrival.

7:50 a.m. — Security responded to a dispute between students in a room of Eichberg Hall. A SCAD student was upset because a group of graduate students would not allow her to use a computer in the room. The graduate students stated that the computers in the room had been reserved and that she could use other computers around campus.

9:55 a.m. — Dispatch received a call reporting that police were on site at Turner Annex searching for a non-SCAD individual. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police arrested a guest in a room of the residence hall for an outstanding warrant, and issued a report.

12:10 p.m. — Animal Control was on site at Turner House to speak with a SCAD student who had been bitten by a dog at an off-campus location on March 20. The officer spoke with the student and then departed the site.

7:07 p.m. — Security discovered that a large pot in front of Crites Hall had been broken in half. ABM Janitorial Services was notified of the incident.

7:22 p.m. — Security discovered that a restricted parking sign had been bent in half and was lying on the ground at Fahm Hall.

7:24 p.m. — Security responded to an alarm activation at Wallin Hall. The alarm was silenced and reset.

7:46 p.m. — Security responded to a “trouble smoke” alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. The alarm was determined to have been caused by a student cooking in the dorm.

 

May 28

3:40 p.m. — Security responded to a minor vehicle accident at the Weston/Dyson lot involving a SCAD employee-driven van and a parked car. The student did not wish to notify police.

4:35 p.m. — Security discovered the southeast emergency door at Alexander Hall was unsecured. A patrol of the building was completed and security secured the door.

8:10 p.m. — A SCAD employee reported to security that she had received a threatening e-mail from a former SCAD employee. The director of security was notified of the situation.

8:49 p.m. — A SCAD student reported to security that a man had exposed himself near Norris Hall. The student stated that she was waiting for the bus when she noticed that the man, who was a block away, was staring at her and had exposed himself. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and took a description of the man.

 

May 29

3:18 a.m. — Security discovered the front door of Forsyth House was propped open. The access system was tested and was discovered to be not working. A security officer was posted at the door until repairs to the system could be completed.

2:10 p.m. — Security responded to a medical at Eichberg Hall involving a staff member who had fallen and injured her nose. EMS responded to the scene and transported the staff member to Memorial University Medical Center.

8:30 p.m. — Security responded to a room in Oglethorpe House in reference to an intoxicated guest who had become verbally abusive. A SCAD student stated that she had asked her guest to leave and he had refused to depart. The guest was escorted off the property and asked not to return. At 10:45 p.m., the individual was observed climbing a wall at Oglethorpe House in an attempt to enter the property. SCMPD was notified and responded to the scene. The individual was questioned by SCMPD and was arrested for criminal trespass.

11:03 p.m. — Security responded to an elevator entrapment at Turner House. The Savannah Fire Department had responded to the scene after the student had called 911, and released the student from the elevator.

11:19 p.m. — Security received a call from a student requesting to speak with an on-call counselor. Security contacted the counselor and passed on the student’s contact information.
