College Security Report: Sept. 28-Oct. 11, 2009

Sept. 28

8:02 a.m.— Security responded to an incident between a SCAD student and a security officer at Hamilton Hall. The officer had stopped the student from entering the building because the student did not have a valid ID. The student became argumentative and called the security officer a derogatory name before leaving the site.

11:44 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Arnold Hall involving a SCAD student. The student was complaining of chest pains and difficulty breathing. EMS responded to the scene and, after evaluating the student, transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center. EMS stated that they believed the student was suffering from an anxiety attack.

1:40 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at Abercorn Terrace. Upon security’s arrival, Savannah Fire Department had already been on the scene and departed. The alarm was determined to be false and Sonitrol alarm company was already on site working on the system.

2:17 p.m.— Security responded to a property damage call at the security booth of Barnard Village. A SCAD student stated that as she was entering Barnard Village the gate arm lowered prematurely and struck the top of her vehicle causing a dent to the roof the car. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. Security took pictures of the damage.

Sept. 29

3:45 a.m.— Security responded to a call box alarm activation at Arnold Hall. Security checked the area and found nothing unusual in the vicinity of the call box.

2:10 p.m.— Parking Services discovered an abandoned white Volvo S70 in the Gulfstream overflow parking lot. The vehicle has been in the lot since Sept. 4 when the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were called out to check on damage to the vehicle’s window. The vehicle has a SCAD parking decal.

4:20 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Eckburg Hall involving a SCAD student. The student had cut his hand in class and was transported by a fellow student to Memorial University Medical Center.

4:49 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that she had lost her SCAD ID and a credit card in the area of Dyson/Weston. The student stated that she had last seen her ID when she used it to gain entry to Dyson/Weston at 4 a.m. Sept. 28. The student stated that she had already cancelled her credit card.

7:45 p.m.— Security responded to a fire alarm activation at Pulaski House. Security met the Savannah Fire Department on site and it was determined that the alarm was false and the system was silenced and reset.

11:09 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen the tires of his bicycle while it was locked to the bike rack closest to Club SCAD. The student stated that he locked the bike to the rack at 6 p.m. Sept. 28, and that he noticed the tires missing at 9 a.m. the next morning. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

Sept. 30

2:36 a.m.— Security responded to a call box alarm activation at Bergen Hall. A SCAD professor stated that he could not remember where he parked and was not able to locate his vehicle. After unsuccessfully attempting to assist the professor with locating his vehicle, security contacted the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police.

12:20 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Arnold Hall involving a SCAD student. The student stated that he was having chest pains and was also having trouble breathing. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Candler Hospital.

12:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen her bike while she was at a work-study position at Garrison Elementary School. She stated that she had locked the bike to a pole at 9 a.m., and that the bike was gone when she returned at 12:15 p.m. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. The bike was registered with SCAD security.

Oct. 1

3:20 a.m.— Security stopped a SCAD student from entering Turner House with a SCAD ID that did not belong to her. She attempted to gain entry to Turner House using an ID belonging to another student. Security confiscated the ID.

7:26 p.m.— A Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police officer notified security that he had found a moped parked on the 1700 block of LeGrand Street. Officer Butler stated that he believed that the moped had either been abandoned or possibly stolen. The moped was registered with SCAD security and belongs to a SCAD student. Security gave the student’s contact information to the police officer and will attempt to contact the student.

8:30 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm. Security silenced and reset the alarm.

10:10 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm. Security silenced and reset the alarm.

6:20 p.m.— A SCAD student notified security that her bike had been stolen from DeRenne Plaza on East Liberty Street. She stated that she had locked the bike in the parking lot at 8 a.m. Oct. 1, and that it was gone when she returned at 6:20 p.m. the same day. Security informed the student to stand by and that security would respond and the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police would be notified. When security arrived at the scene, the student had already departed the scene.

Oct. 2

5:30 p.m.— Security was notified by a SCAD student conduct office employee that there was a student in an Arnold Hall classroom that was attending class without wearing shoes. Security responded to the scene and asked the student to depart the building. The student was informed that he could return to class when he was properly attired.

1 p.m.— A SCAD student notified security that his bike had been stolen from his friend’s porch on 37th Street between Jefferson and Barnard streets. He stated that he had set the bike on the porch at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 2, and that the bike was gone when he returned at 1 p.m. The bike was not locked. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

2:06 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation with evacuation at Pulaski House. Security determined that the alarm was caused by students cooking in a room. Security silenced and reset the alarm.

Oct. 3

12:42 a.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Bergen Hall. Security responded to the scene and determined that the alarm was false.

2:14 a.m.— A SCAD student attempted to gain entry to Turner House using an ID belonging to another SCAD student. She stated that she had misplaced her ID earlier in the day. Security contacted the resident assistant who confirmed that she was a resident of Turner House and she was allowed to enter. The other ID was turned over to the resident assistant.

Oct. 4

12:43 a.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was false and that there was no smoke or haze present. The alarm was silenced, but could not be reset. Sonitrol alarm company was notified and asked that a work order be placed to have the system looked at.

1:30 a.m.— Security discovered a rear fire emergency exit door at Gulfstream Center was unsecured. A foot patrol was conducted of the building and the door was secured.

12:05 p.m.— A SCAD parent called security and complained that her daughter was being harassed by her roommates at Abercorn Terrace. She stated that there were two unknown men sleeping in her daughter’s room and bed. She also stated that her daughter’s roommates had invited the men over and that she was concerned as to how this could happen when the residence halls should have no overnight visitors. Security took the parent’s information and passed it along to the residence director who stated that she would call the parent.

Oct. 5

12:01 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that he had lost his SCAD ID while walking in the Dyson parking lot. Security advised the student that he could get a replacement card at York Hall.

2:35 a.m.— A resident assistant reported to security that she had heard loud noises coming out of a room in Boundary Village. When she knocked on the door a male student opened the door, had a brief conversation with the residence director, but then shut the door and locked it. When the resident assistant knocked again and asked for admission, no one would answer or unlock the door. At this time, the resident assistant could hear cabinets being opened and shut. A call was placed to the residence director, who instructed the resident assistant to open the door with the dorm master key. Upon entry into the room, a different SCAD student came to the door and asked what was going on. The resident assistant asked permission to search the cabinets and a search was conducted by with negative results. The three male visitors, all students, were asked to leave and they complied.

Oct. 6

5 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that his vehicle had been damaged while it was parked in the Montgomery Hall parking lot. The student stated that a rock had hit his windshield sometime while he was in class between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

8:31 p.m.— A SCAD parent called security and stated that she was concerned that her daughter had not been in touch with her all day. Security responded to the student’s room at Oglethorpe House and met with the student. The student stated that she would call her mother immediately.

11:41 p.m.— Security discovered a rear fire emergency exit door was unsecured at Gulfstream Center. A foot patrol of the building was conducted and then security locked the door.

Oct. 7

6:10 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the room. Security could not reset the panel. Sonitrol alarm company was notified of the situation.

10:41 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was false and that there was no smoke or haze present. Security could not reset the panel. Sonitrol alarm company was notified of the situation.

Oct. 8

10:30 p.m.— Security responded to a fire alarm door activation at Fahm Hall. A security officer stated that an unknown student had exited the building through the fire door activating the alarm. Security secured the door.

10:51 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined that the alarm was false and the system was silenced and reset.

Oct. 9

3:08 a.m.— A SCAD student called security and requested to speak with an on-call counselor. Security called the on-call counselor and transferred the student to her.

7:56 a.m.— A security officer stopped a student from entering Boundary Hall without a valid ID. He asked the officer, “What would you do if I just ran in?” At this time the student’s professor walked by the desk and told the him that he would have to go get his ID before entering. He left the site, but gave the officer the finger prior to departing.

4:40 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that his bike had been stolen from the front bike rack at Montgomery Hall. He stated that he had left the bike unsecured at the rack at 1:40 p.m. Oct. 8, and that the bike was missing when he returned at 4:30 p.m. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. The bike was not registered with SCAD security.

4:40 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that she had lost her phone. She stated that she believes that she lost the phone in the Weston lot sometime around Oct. 5.

5:57 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Wallin Hall involving a student. She stated that she was not feeling well and requested EMS. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Candler Hospital.

11:43 p.m.— A residence director notified security that she had found a bag of a leafy substance in the Weston/Dyson lot that she believed may be drugs. Security notified the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and met them at the scene. The bag and its contents were turned over to the police for destruction. The police issued a report.

Oct. 10

9:42 a.m.— Two SCAD students notified security that two vehicles located near the Savannah Civic Center had broken windows. One vehicle had a SCAD parking decal. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and determined that one vehicle did belong to a student. The police issued a report.

11:02 a.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm. Security silenced and reset the alarm.

Oct. 11

2:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from in front of her room at Barnard Village. She stated that she had left her bike unsecured in front of her dorm at 10:30 p.m. Oct. 10, and that she noticed the bike was missing at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. The bike was not registered with SCAD security.
