As the quarter nears the end, the stress of upcoming finals is building to a boiling point. Some students view the end of spring quarter as the beginning of summer break, but for others it may mean stepping into the real world, finding a job, losing longtime friendships or even ending personal relationships.
Whether you are a freshman or senior, SCAD Counseling and Student Support Services (CS3) offers student workshops, seminars and private chat sessions on how to de-stress, refocus and move forward.
CS3 offers individual, couple and group counseling sessions where students learn valuable skill in time management, good study habits, creativity coaching, art therapy and self-help services.
CS3 sees around 3,000 students each year to help treat anxiety, depression and drug and alcohol abuse. Most students visit CS3 during spring quarter due to high anxiety from graduation stress, finding a job, leaving significant others as well and other relationship issues.
Each quarter, CS3 offers a number of services. For spring, students have the opportunity to participate in general support groups for a better transition from high school or other college environments, drum talk sessions to drum and dance your stress away.
Support groups include Academics Anonymous, where students learn strategies to succeed, creativity counseling where students learn how to work past creative blocks and procrastination and art therapy for students to find identity and self awareness through mixed medias. Tobacco cessation is also available to students, faculty and staff who want to kick the habit.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in the “Can We Talk” outreach sessions to air out any worries or fears. All sessions are free and confidential.
CS3 also has disabilities services under its umbrella of services. Students with reading or learning disabilities can make an appointment with a counselor and bring medical proof of the disability to find out what services are offered.
Some students have the option of scanning books to convert into MP3 audio streams to aid in learning. All students have the option of a free psychological screening. If on-site counselors feel a condition is chronic, an outside professional referral will be made.
If the stress of life and school is getting you down, visit the staff of CS3 located on the first floor of York Hall. For more information on CS3 and the programs they offer call 912-525-6971 or email any questions to counseling@scad.edu.
