The “In Conversation with Daniel Kaluuya” panel began at 5:00 p.m. Nov. 2, at the SCAD Museum of Art. Daniel Kaluuya, is a British actor and writer best known for his lead role in the American horror film “Get Out.”
Kaluuya discussed his break into the film industry, and how he initially pursued a career in acting. Although, Kaluuya is recognized for his roles in the film “Black Panther,” he undoubtably plays equally important characters in other works including: “Skins,” “Black Mirror” and “Widows.”
His performance in “Get Out” earned multiple nominations for the Academy Awards, British Academy Film Awards and Golden Globe Awards. During his panel, Kaluuya expressed just how much his daily life has changed since that film. “After the film premiered in theaters, more and more people recognized me in public,” Kaluuya said. “It was a strange, yet relieving feeling, almost acting as a reassurance that I made it.”
Kaluuya made a lasting impression on each student by giving them a piece of advice he gained from his experience in the industry. “Lead with your judgement, ” Kaluuya said. “Yes, the script may encourage you to cry during a specific scene but I have learned that if you absorb the moment and act in accordance to the way you feel, the scene will appear more realistic and relatable which is exactly what viewers desire.”
