District Detours: weekend of March 7

From free music performances in Ellis Square and art markets on the street to kooky film nights, let District Detours guide your weekend of fun around Savannah.

 

Thursday, March 6:

Savannah Stopover

Times and locations vary

Beginning Thursday night and running through the weekend there will be more than 100 performances by musicians on their way to Austin, Texas for the South by Southwest Film and Music Festival. Musicians will invade Savannah and play everywhere from City Coffee, the Moon River Beer Garden, and Ellis Square, to Hang Fire Bar and Club One. ‘Puebloan Building Cultures and Economic Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau: Past and Present’

SCAD Museum of Art, 601 Turner Blvd.

5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Last year, architectural history professor Patrick Haughey visited a building site in what used to be known as the Colorado Plateau. See what Haughey has to share about this site and others as he discusses the altered landscapes of the Colorado Plateau. Haughey will analyze how Puebloans changed the land and discuss the present day situations causing natives to alter it again. For more information about this lecture, visit the event page.

 

Friday, March 7:

First Friday Art March

Various locations

6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This monthly event prompts participants to jump on a trolley and check out locally produced art at different galleries, coffee shops and stores across town. Art Rise Savannah worked with local businesses to support the art community in Savannah through this Art March, and Brighter Day and SCAD printmaking students are the new additions this month. SCADDY Awards

See the best of the best in SCAD’s advertising department at the SCADDY awards, honoring outstanding student achievement. The faculty reviewed student work from fall 2012 to 2013 and have determined who deserves a SCADDY award. For more information about the awards, go to their event page.

 

Sweets on the Street

River Street, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Celebrate March with first Friday and Saturday activities down on River Street. Local artists and regional craftsmen will show and sell their work at Rousakis Plaza, where there will also be food booths and entertainment. At 7 p.m. there will be an outdoor screening of “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory,” followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m. For more information, go to their website.

 

Black Maria Film Festival

Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St.

7 p.m.

This touring film festival will only stop in Savannah for one night. Go see the variety of short films offered — experimental to animation and documentaries. General admission is $5 and is free for students with a valid SCAD ID. For more information, go to their website.

 

‘Reveries and Other Fantasies’ Reception

Fahm Hall Gallery, 1 N. Fahm St.

5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Giordano Angeletti’s photography exhibition contrasts idealized architecture with reality using miniatures and Southern vernacular architecture. See how Angeletti forms a narrative and explores space with his photography. For more information about this reception, go to the event page.

Margie Bach, Jennifer Fitch, Rachel Greneker, Jennifer Hardee and Rachel Sawyer, five seniors from Armstrong University, show their work from the fine arts program. Seersucker Live: The Jig Episode

It’s time for another round of Seersucker Live! This part literary reading, part talk show, part cocktail party is pairing with the Stopover Festival and giving guests live music. Beverly Donofrio, the best-selling author of “Riding in Cars with Boys;” Ross Klavan, the screenwriter of “Tigerland;” and Amy Paige Condon, the digital editor at Savannah Magazine, will share some of their work and advice. Saturday, March 8:

“Hairspray”

Crites Hall, 217 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

See how students dance to the beat as Tracy, Link, Penny and Seaweed. More than 30 performers, including American Idol semi-finalist Sandie Lee, will sing songs from the award-winning musical “Hairspray.” This is part of music director Kevin Wallace’s PE SCORES, a series of performances with minimal costumes and set where actors hold their scripts and scores so the focus stays on their voices. Fishbowl Kooky Time

Keep the short films rolling and check out students’ work. This one-night only exhibition features students’ experimental films. Third and fourth-year film students will show the work they developed this quarter in Michael Chaney’s experimental film class.

 

Sunday, March 9:

Free Day of Dance

1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Ever wanted to learn how to dance? Well this is a perfect opportunity, because the Salon de Baile Dance Studio is offering free dance classes.
