Major cities and tourist attractions alike tend to have a way of making their name known through key elements such as their visual appeal, a pool of activities, and most importantly: food. The unique charm of Savannah’s small businesses and notable eateries draws in crowds from all over. We wanted to hone in on something that, according to the surplus of available options and raving reviews, Savannah does exorbitantly well: coffee.

As SCAD students, we have had to learn the hard way how to obtain the right amount of caffeine at the most convenient price in order to survive the beast that is finals week — or every other week, respectfully. However, there is no doubt that each and every coffee stop among the city’s many attractions have a distinct outlook on the idea of the “classic” café.

From the familiar and cozy setting of Foxy Loxy to the sophisticated atmosphere of Collin’s Quarter, there are plenty of options for those of you looking to get your caffeine fix. We decided to go on a beginner’s coffee tour of some of the most basic spots around town in order to experience — and better yet, taste — the difference between such notable businesses’ coffee options. Although it just covers the tip of the iceberg as far as Savannah’s coffee options go, our tour allowed us to take into account the products as well as the atmosphere of these specific spots and how they cater to the college community.

Places like Savannah Coffee Roasters, Mirabelle, The Paris Market and Franklin’s offer a wide variety of food, baked goods and beverages for the hungry customer. As full-time art students, we’re not only looking for great food and drink but also an environment outside of the classroom where we can work and be inspired. Though finding your favorite latte in town is also a plus.

These places, among many others, are fundamentally providing an experience for those open to diving into Savannah’s artsy and exclusive coffee scene. If you’re on the hunt for your favorite café, we suggest finding a dedicated friend or two and going on a coffee tour of your own.  You can become the coffee snob that you were destined to be in no time!
