Tyler Perry’s sequel, “Why Did I Get Married Too,” has a formula of some familiar melodrama that you would expect from the director, but there is a good movie to be had here.
We tend to hold high expectations of sequels when it comes to movies we’re fond of. In this case, “Why Did I Get Married Too” was greatly anticipated and follows the lines of Tyler Perry’s soap-opera-like comedies.
For those of you familiar with Tyler Perry films, there’s a distinct difference between those starring his alter ego Madea and the gripping dramas that face the issues of reality. This film is categorized with the latter: it focuses on the ups and downs of married life, along with the joys and pain that you may suffer along the journey.
The sequel picks up right where the 2007 film, “Why Did I Get Married,” left off (although you don’t need to have watched the predecessor in order to follow this film). Perry draws us back into the lives of the four married couples from the previous film, who are facing changes in their lives.
The drama begins when the couples meet up with each other at a beautiful Bahamian timeshare to evaluate their relationships. After all, what would any Tyler Perry film be without the usual melodramatic content?
Although it was a few hours short of being your daily soap opera, the constant tumble between drama and over-exaggerated comedy are what keep you tuned in, despite the somewhat jumbled plot. At times the story lines are not continued, but you can easily assume what happens next in the plot. Perry’s predictable nature proves beneficial.
As the plot unfolds, more secrets are revealed that everyone could see coming, yet the constant theatrics keep you on the edge of your seats. It seemed that after the climax, the film was abruptly cut short. There is plenty of room left for the viewer to anticipate another sequel.
Aside from the fact that this storyline is all too common with his films, I’m not bored with them. I still consider this film as a must see. The question of the hour is, when will we all get tired of his all too common storylines? Until then, I’ll remain a Tyler Perry fan, and wait around for the next drama to unveil itself.
It’s showing at Trademark Cinemas Victory Stadium 9. Visit their Web site to buy tickets.
