St. Patrick’s Day is always a wild ride in Savannah. The entire city shuts down. Parades flood the streets and people line the squares. Some even try to claim their spot a day ahead of time. Tourists flock to our fair southern city from all around to enjoy this huge event. However, this year’s celebration plans are a little different.
St. Patrick’s Day this year falls in the seven sacred days that proceed Easter. Bishop J. Kevin Boland of the Diocese of Savannah wrote to nearly every agency in the city saying that the diocese was changing the date of its celebration this yearso that it would not conflict with Holy Week. Other cities, such as Philadelphia and Milwaukee, have also changed the date of their celebrations. However, many other cites have decided to go ahead with their original plans.
Though the actual Savannah parade and city celebration have been moved, many citizens and students have decided that they will go ahead with their own festivities. Students have been expressing concern over the change in dates. District sees this as an opportunity to fully enjoy your spring break, and to enjoy this interesting and old holiday to its full extent. However, we would like to remind all of our readers that we do not support underage drinking. Also, remember that SCAD is a dry campus and alcohol is illegal on all SCAD property.
