Enjoy free admission to Savannah museums on Super Museum Sunday

By Elena Burnett and Kylie Ruffino.

February 11, this coming Sunday, is Super Museum Sunday, a state-wide event curated by the Georgia Historical Society, when nearly every museum in Georgia offers free admission. In the Savannah area, 37 museums will be participating.

Elyse Butler, the Outreach Coordinator at the Georgia Historical Society, says the event began as an effort of the Coastal Museum Association “to make people more aware of the surrounding museums. Georgia Historical Society made it more of a statewide thing.”

“Often times people feel excluded or are not able to access these institutions,” said president of SCAD’s Art History Society Paige Ganzel, “so an event like Super Museum Sunday makes art accessible to all.”

SCAD’s Art History Society will be putting together a walking tour open to students of all majors to explore many of the museums in the city. “Not all works of art featured on Super Museum Sunday are by local artists,” Ganzel said, “but by immersing ourselves into a walking tour of Savannah, the works are recontextualized within our own environment. This is great because it can provide new perspectives and opportunities for inspiration.” The tour will begin at the Sentient Bean at noon.

For those who would like to participate on their own, Butler recommends checking out this Google map to plot your course, or starting at the Georgia Historical Society Research Center on the corner of Forsyth at Whitaker and Gaston Streets, and picking up a physical copy of the guide. “I always find it helpful to have something in front of you,” Butler said. The staff at the Research Center can also help students choose among the 37 museums to visit based upon their individual interests.
