The SCAD’s Fibers program hosted their Open Studio Night March 1 at Pepe Hall. The event included work from Intro to Fibers students through Fibers Senior Studio. The Fibers major explores prints, woven and knit designs through large scale works and even digital embroidery.
Senior student Laura Nichols said, “there are two worlds in Fibers: print pattern and weaving.” Nichols explained that she prefers weaving and plans to pursue homeware in the future. “My inspiration comes from home. I’m a very sentimental person,” Nichols said, “I think about my hometown a lot during my process. I tend to include crabs, fish and anything that comes from the water since I grew up close it. It’s so nice to be in Savannah where we have the beach.” Most of the works she produces are as Nichol’s says, “things she would like to have in her home.”
Sophomore student Hannah Olez’s pieces were included within a collage along with those of other students. “My inspiration happens freely, I like to create organic, flowing patterns. I’m now beginning to explore conceptual art in my current pieces,” Olez said. Her displayed fabrics included fluid lines dyed to maroons and pale pinks. “Working with a silk protein fiber requires acid dye whereas cellulose fibers such as cotton require reactive dyes which come out lighter,” said Olez.
Open Studio also included interactive exhibits led by Fibers students. Live models were presenting other pieces and attendees were able to enjoy large scale works throughout the halls of Pepe.
