‘Fight Club’ remains relevant 21 years later

I am about to break the first (and second) rule of fight club, “You do not talk about fight club.”

The story begins with the narrator suffering from insomnia and invades support groups to cure his insomnia. On a flight to one of his work trips, the narrator meets this captivating man, Tyler Durden, who challenges him and everything he thought he knew. Durden and the narrator initiate an underground fight club in Seattle and eventually a nationwide terrorism cult.

One distinct scene is when the narrator and Durden stop at a convenient store where Durden rushes the cashier outside at gunpoint. Durden asks “what did you want to be?” The cashier responds, “Veterinarian!”

“If you’re not on your way to becoming a veterinarian in six weeks, you will be dead,” Durden says. The narrator looks at the gun only to learn that it was unloaded. This scene is suspenseful yet philosophical. Durden’s purpose was to persuade that man to choose a life that makes him feel alive.

Academy Award-nominated sound editors Ren Klyce and Richard Hymns were impressive with the creations of raw sounds. Main actors Edward Norton, and Brad Pitt, gave an impeccable and memorable performance.

Writer Chuck Palahniuk wrote an exceptional script, allowing the ending to be a complete revelation. Director, David Fincher, deserves full recognition for the making of this film.

With the use of somber colors, such as dark yellow lighting in the underground fighting and house scenes, and shadows, cinematographer, Jeff Cronenweth established a grim mood for the film.

“Fight Club” is an iconic masterpiece. It leaves you thinking about the film for days, wondering how the writers generated a brilliant story. Although the film’s ending is rather intense, the film’s hidden message makes it a must-see.

After 21 years, this film greatly impacts society today. The “Fight Club’s” significance was that the characters lacked emotion, feelings and the want to live. It reminds us to find a path in life that is thrilling and filled with passion. There is a purpose for all the pain we go through, and not to be afraid of what life throws at us.
