Films in Forsyth presents: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
With the hectic midterms over, many flocked to Forsyth Park to enjoy a relaxing evening in the park and were eager to see the 1971 classic movie, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” starring Gene Wilder. Last Friday night was the second screening by Films in Forsyth in collaboration with the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival. Since the event was open to the public, it also brought a large number of Savannah locals, providing an opportunity for students and residents to interact with each other.
Armed with blankets, chairs, food, drinks and even pets, groups and couples alike chatted away as they waited for dusk to fall and the movie to begin. Meanwhile, live music provided additional entertainment in a nearby tent though it was really meant for the parents in celebration of the university’s Parents Weekend.
A small trailer served as the concession stand well equipped with candy of all kinds. A 50/50 raffle was also a highlight of the night with half the money collected as first prize and a gift basket from Savannah’s Candy Kitchen as second prize.
“Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” is based on Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” The story is about Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum), a poor, little boy who wins one of the five golden tickets to visit Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and is given a tour of the area by none other than Mr. Wonka himself. Throughout the tour, Charlie and viewers are introduced to the delightful and mischievous Oompa Loompas, and four other repulsive children and their equally repulsive parents.
Audiences enjoyed Gene Wilder’s portrayal of the quirky Wonka as well as the misfortunes that befell the children. This classic tale of underdog emerging triumphant proved to be even better than Mr. Wonka’s chocolate itself.
