Although recent times have prevented award shows like the Golden Globes from being the grand public spectacles we’re used to, that doesn’t mean the actors, films and TV shows should go unnoticed. Here, we’ve compiled just a few of the works worth checking out.
- Encanto
We don’t talk about Bruno…but we certainly will talk about the winner of the Golden Globes’ Best Animated Feature Film: “Encanto.” The film follows the “ungifted” and “ordinary” character of Mirabel as she journeys to save her family’s magic. In turn, she learns what it truly means to be a part of her unique and prodigious family.
- The Power of the Dog
Winner of Best Picture for a Drama, “The Power of the Dog” follows Benedict Cumberbatch’s character Phil Burbank, a charming yet bitter rancher who opens himself to feelings of love and compassion when his brother brings home a widow and her son.
- West Side Story (2021)
The newest adaptation of “West Side Story” not only won Best Picture for a Musical/Comedy, but the cast also includes breakout star Rachel Zegler, the winner of Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy). The film combines the nostalgia of the classic story of forbidden love with the modernity of fresh faces and new voices.
- tick, tick…BOOM!
In what the internet refers to as the “modern renaissance of Andrew Garfield,” “tick, tick…BOOM!” only proves their point. The film is an adaptation of the autobiographical play written by Jonathan Larson (more famously known as the creator of Rent.) Larson, played by Garfield, is shown navigating the struggles of adulthood, relationships, and his career (and occasionally he may burst into song).
- Succession
The winner of the Globes’ award for Best Drama Series, “Succession” follows four children of the dysfunctional Roy family as they all struggle to climb to the top of their media conglomerate, Waystar Roy Co., before their father (the head of the company) passes away.
