Foundations Honors Show
Parents’ Weekend started off with the 21st annual Foundations Honors Show. The show recognized the best of student work done in their foundation studies classes. Proud parents crowded the halls of Wallin Hall to browse through the artworks, which were a colorful mixture of charcoal, paint and other media.
According to Patrick McKinnon, a Drawing II professor, there were more than 500 entries for the show. Bibiana Aguero, a first-year graphic design major, said that she was surprised to have her work featured because of the competition. “There are so many talented students out there,” she explained.
While the Foundations Honors Show was a way for parents to see what SCAD students did during their first few quarters, it was also a way for the students to be recognized among their peers. “I feel honored,” said Ji Young Kim, a first-year painting major. “This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our work and talent.”
Rachel Schulz, a first-year animation major, said that she felt “excited and blessed” to have her work featured. She also added that the awards show “gives students the confidence and it’s a new way for them to be recognized.”
After refreshments were served, McKinnon announced the winners. In the Black-and-White Drawing category, Hyemin Hailey Lee won first place, followed by Kiana Reed, who won second place, and Dana DiGoia, who won third. Laura Kempf won third place for her work in the Color Drawing category while Axel Alvarez was runner up and Charlotte Fries took home first. Chris Kinter won third place in the 2-D category, Dakota Hokanson won second, and Chai Dahye took home first place. Schulz won second place in the Color Theory category while Crosby Ignasher won first place.
Although the winners in the 3-D category had their work displayed in Boundary Hall, they were still awarded at the show. Brigette Gatbe won first place. The Best-In-Show award was given to Yoonyoung Jang, whose prize also included a set of markers worth $500.
After the show, one of the guest judges admitted that it was “really difficult” to determine the winners. He congratulated both the students and the teachers for their hard work.
