Get to Know … Amanda Francis

By Michael Jewell

Name: Amanda Francis
Major: Sequential art
Year: Fourth

Amanda Francis is an illustrator who works in dual extremes. Under the pen-name Ainsi, she carves high-contrast work out of ink and watercolor. With sensual line, contrasting color and a meticulous attention to visual detail, she explores characters interacting with frail bodies and explicit gore. In her Dimensions Gallery show “Undismantled,” she explores her own visceral reaction to her process of working on the comic “Aphasia;” the illustrations and comic pages on display are meant to provoke a similar reaction in the readers. Her work has been shown in galleries all across the United States and abroad, showcasing similar themes of duality, joy and beauty entangled in the struggle against death. She draws from her multi-ethnic background to provide an Eastern and Western inspiration for her morbid visions. Already working hard to publish her books, Ainsi will put her perspective B.F.A. from SCAD to use and dig deeper to bring her type O negative point of view to the world.
