David Karlak says it took him over 10 years to realize that his passion and calling is in film. Once he made his decision, he threw himself into it wholeheartedly, coming to SCAD on a full portfolio/academic scholarship. Since coming to SCAD, Karlak has spent each summer interning with some incredible people and companies, culminating in his own major project. In June 2006 he worked as an intern fielding incoming screenplays and as a visual effects artist on Dimension Films’ “Feast.” The next summer he worked as a visual effects and compositing artist for “American Pie 5: The Naked Mile.” December of last year he worked as a camera intern on the film “The Burning Plain,” directed by Guillermo Arriaga with cinematography by Robert Elswit (winner of the Academy Award for “There Will Be Blood”). He is now working as an assistant to director Marcus Dunstan — writer of “Saw IV,” “Saw V,” “Feast,” “The Midnight Man” and “Hellraiser”(2009) — as well as completing his own project, a documentary about a Chimpanzee retirement home in Louisiana.
