For the second time now, this winter quarter SCAD’s writing department is offering a Magazine Journalism class taught by visiting writer Gioia Diliberto. Diliberto’s success varies from publications such as Vanity Fair, Town & Country, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and the Huffington Post. She has also written many biographies and historical novels that focus mainly on important female figures.
“All my important works have been about women who, in their personalities or accomplishments, symbolize the spirits of their time,” said Diliberto of her written work.
Diliberto is mostly a writer and teaches occasionally, but she said loves SCAD students’ way of thinking, as well as their creativity. The 10-week course requires students to write a 1,500-word story they will rewrite and publish throughout the course of the class.
“By the end of the quarter, they will have sharpened all the skills that go into good writing,” said Diliberto.
She is aware of the fact that magazines and newspapers are on a sort of media “life support” as traditional forms of communication struggle to stay relevant, but she acknowledges there is a proliferation of new media in which blogs are created where people want to tell and read stories.
“That tells me there is a need for people who can write, and write well,” said Diliberto. Her aim is to train SCAD students to become these people.
The Magazine Journalism class meets at 2 p.m. Thursdays at Arnold hall. To get in contact with Gioia Diliberto for more information on her work and knowledge, she can be reached via SCAD email at gdiliber@scad.edu.
