Located on Madison Square, Gryphon Tea Room is a SCAD-owned and run restaurant that offers a wide selection of teas as well as finger sandwiches and treats. This elegant establishment greets customers from around the country who are visiting Savannah. The staff consists of SCAD students, which gives customers a great opportunity to ask about their majors and their time at SCAD. As customers are seated, the waiters offer to share the interesting history of the building. Built in 1926, the building originally served as a Scottish Rite Temple, eventually turning into an apothecary until it was bought by SCAD in 1981. The interior decoration odes to the building’s past, including bookcases and Tiffany-style stained glass and lamps. Every detail of the space is refined and sophisticated without lacking warmth and charm.

Each item on the menu is sourced locally, placing emphasis on fresh, high-quality food. With a wide array of snacks and entrees to choose from, there is something for everyone at Gryphon. Tourists enjoy experiencing afternoon tea, a mid-day meal consisting of sandwiches, fruit and sweet pastries. A full menu of entrees is also offered, making Gryphon a perfect location for lunch in downtown Savannah. Each tea is served in white porcelain teapots accompanied by a matching teacup and saucer. Vintage tealeaf strainers are also provided, further enhancing the fine dining experience. No detail is left unconsidered at this refined institution.

For over 30 years, Gryphon Tea Room has served Savannah locals and visitors an exquisite dining experience, as well as providing jobs for hard-working SCAD students. This restaurant should be on everyone’s must-do list.
