Henny Penny Art Space and Café begun as a collaboration between Carrie Christian (founder of Scribble Art Studio) and Jennifer Jenkins (founder of Shop the Foxes Co..) Named in contrast to their other café, Foxy Loxy, the two coffee shops take inspiration from the classic story “Henny Penny.” The reference to a childhood story shows its main demographic: families. The café is a space for adults, kids and anyone in between to enjoy some treats while they make art.

Although the art center may seem to be just for children, crafty adults shouldn’t fret! The website’s “About” page says, “Spend some quality time in the art studio connecting with your favorite person, big or small.” Just a small walk from Arnold Hall, the café is a lovely spot for SCAD students to relax in between classes.

Students shouldn’t be intimidated to participate in the café’s artistic events. Although we are creating art on a daily basis, class guidelines can be restricting and stressful at times. Henny Penny invites its guests to color outside the lines! For only twelve dollars, a staff member stationed in the art corner will guide you through the art project of the day. The April art projects include fairy gardens, upcycled bird feeders and a safari set. For more information on their projects, check out their “Art Space”. On this page, they say “Paint on the table? Not a problem here!” This point becomes clear, as the tables within the restaurant are draped in paper, perfect for messy creative play.

The café features fan favorites from the other locations, like the “Herbed Frittata & Goat Cheese Panini.” However, unlike the other Shop The Foxes Co. locations, Henny Penny has a “Chickadees Menu,” which features yummy selections for children. Their drink “Horchata Babycino” takes inspiration from a more adult drink to include the little ones in café classics. Other items, like the grilled cheese, offer those with picky taste a traditional option.

On my visit at Henny Penny, the staff members were very pleasant and helpful in informing me on the focus of the restaurant, along with suggesting options for good eats. Having never heard of Henny Penny beforehand, it was a surprise to see its atmosphere compared to other locations.

Henny Penny’s focus on catering to children sets it apart from other coffee shops, and yet it is a lovely place for people of all ages!
