Hurricane Matthew Helping Opportunities

Written by Claudia Cisneros

Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc on Chatham County, destroying people’s homes, leaving some without power for a few days and ruining many belongings. Four short weeks after the hit and Chatham County is still in need of help, ranging from cleanup, rebuilding and donations. A few ways you can still contribute to the cleaning up of the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew include:

  • Donate blood to the Red Cross. To check to see if there is any Red Cross stations in your area call (1-800-RED-CROSS) or check their website.
  • Donate money to reimburse damaged children books, check out the Reach Out and Read Georgia website to donate.
  • Keep updated with SCAD Serve as they post new needs every week, most involve helping clean up debris caused by the hurricane. Friday, Nov. 11 they are going to the Ronald McDonald house to help clean up and fix fences that were damaged. For more info go to their website.
  • United Way of the Coastal Empire is still accepting donations to support response and recovery efforts, for more information on how to donate go to their website.
  • Communities in Schools of Savannah are requesting donations through an organization called Kids Closet Drive. Many of Savannahs school children’s clothes were lost or damaged in the hurricane and they are still in need of donations. If you want to help go to the website.
  • America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, an organization focused on providing food and other necessities to families, are asking for donations on their website.
  • Feed The Hungry are receiving donations of uncooked foods and other nonperishable necessities. Primary center to drop off donations is at 4011 Augusta Ave, Garden City.

The damage is still not over, with debris needed to be cleaned and donation for those unable to continue the efforts without funds. If you can offer your donations in a single dollar or even a small portion of your time bit-by-bit Chatham County can be rebuilt.
