The SCAD Museum of Art presents “Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pit #4, #9, #7,” a site-specific commissioned drawing by Los Angeles-based artist Ingrid Calame. Acclaimed for her painterly interpretations of the often disregarded markings left by passersby on floors, sidewalks and roadways, Calame has repeatedly found inspiration in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the site from which this piece is sourced.
In response to the passageway architecture of the museum’s gallery, “Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pit #4, #9, #7” translates in one-to-one scale directly on to the museum wall, several tracings Calame has accumulated from the speedway pits. The intricate drawing of tire marks left on the speedway’s “diamond cut” concrete are re-made here with the Renaissance powdered-pigment pounce technique.
In this installation, Calame invites the viewer to travel the space at a slower pace, inspecting the filigree information conveyed in the dusted, colorful patterns that result in an abstract and representational depiction of speed and movement.
The work is presented as part of the 2013 deFINE Art Program and will include a reception Tuesday, February 19 from 6:30 – 8 p.m.
