Film is one of SCAD’s most popular majors, so when creating a new club that aims to provide an opportunity for students to strengthen their skill set and really dive into the post production element of Film and Television, it just made sense.
Video Editor’s Club was officially formed in winter quarter of 2020 and “already has 40 members,” said Harper Brock, a second-year film and television student.
“Video Editor’s club has been a great bridge between the editing community and the rest of the film department,” Brock said. “Through the discussions, guest speakers, software instruction and open student-driven atmosphere, I feel that this club is an important community for SCAD editors, as well as many students studying film.”
The club plans to meet twice a month. “In this club we will be holding workshops and discussions that cover all the creative and technical corners of editing, everything from troubleshooting software, to how to handle creative differences in the editing room and even tips on landing an assistant editor position,” said Professor Alexander Newton, the club’s supervisor. “We will also be talking about the endless opportunities that exist when it comes to shaping content. In every avenue of media today, editors are in high demand, so there is a lot to be excited about if you want to become an editor.”
Additionally, the club would like to connect with student directors and offer them a community space to socialize and more importantly, pair up with an editor that meets their project needs. More often than not, student directors are hard-pressed to find an editor, which usually results in a never-ending night of solo editing due to such limited time. Video Editor’s Club intends to make this one of their top priorities, because they understand just how necessary it is.
“The director-editor relationship is one of the most important on a film project, right up there with the cinematographer and the actors. The art of collaboration in the editing room is a part of filmmaking that every director and editor should learn,” Newton said. “The hope is that students will feel a sense of community. Whether they’re facing a software issue or a creative issue in their timeline, there are other students out there working through the same challenges who can relate and maybe even lend a hand.”
The Video Editor’s Club meetings are held on two Fridays a month. The meetings are open to everyone and are easy to attend, since they are being held virtually, via Zoom, due to COVID-19. Additionally, there are several social media outlets to help you feel connected during this virtual transition, including Instagram and Facebook.
