Looking around and inside for inspiration

Movies, music, magazines and memories. All perfect places for an artist like myself to find inspiration. As a photographer, I’ve explored a variety of different subjects and have been inspired by a plethora of things around me.

At times, the earth itself is an inspiration. One glance at a breathtaking mountain or an up-close inspection of a leaf can get me inspired. Beyond that, popular culture also provides an endless amount of ideas through different shots in films or lyrics in songs. But above all else, my main source of inspiration is life.

Throughout high school, I experimented with self-portraits using pictures to discuss different parts of myself and my identity. I was inspired by experiences and how they made me feel. When I was going through tough times, photography allowed me to express my feelings in ways that words couldn’t.

In “Lost in Film,” I wrapped myself in film in order to show how my photography speaks for me and often lets me convey my true feelings. As a result, I found inspiration in my everyday life. Stressful times in school or unfavorable social situations sparked something that allowed me to create.

As time went on, I began to focus more on womanhood. As a woman, I frequently feel unheard and misunderstood. Luckily, I was able to use my photos to speak out against things in my life that disturbed me. Sexist comments inspired a series of images that allowed me to express my anger and disgust about things that I’ve heard. The stigma surrounding birth control inspired my “My Body, My Choice” project.

Unrealistic expectations for women inspired “Traditional Kitchen.”

Constant fear of walking alone or being harassed inspired “I Shouldn’t Have to Be Afraid” images.

Although these experiences were, and continue to be infuriating, they’ve provided a lot of inspiration for my artwork. In turn, my artwork has provided me with an outlet to communicate my emotions. So when it comes to inspiration, all I need to do is look around and inside.
