Mantis Space Systems: Let the games begin

Centering around the SCAD dormitories, the annual Humans vs. Zombies allows for hundreds of students to unplug from their everyday routines and take part in a week full of humorous, competitive and collaborative challenges.

This year’s game begins early Thursday morning and continues on until the weekend’s finish. Game Play Coordinator Paul Bishai described HVZ 2014 as ll “a very new and scary world.”

An atmosphere of excitement filled Dyson Field as teams gathered together for an evening full of all-inclusive video presentations that were used to explain the game. Afterward, students lined up across the field and fought to claim their ID badges and bandanas, as well as their copies of the game’s “Survivor’s Guide” and “Rules Cheat Sheet.”

Students had the opportunity to skip the line and avoid the chaos in exchange for a $5 donation.

“The money will go to the orphans of Syria, and you will be able to help those in an unfortunate situation,” Bishai said.

Mention of the game’s “Original Zombie” generated suspense throughout the groups of people waiting in line. The Original Zombie is selected on Wednesday at midnight and is responsible for creating the first generation of zombies. The Original Zombie remains anonymous during the game.

HVZ player Cat Santos said, “Don’t run from zombies because you’re carrying all your gear and they’ll outrun you. It is so much easier to exit slowly with everyone.”

While a map of the both game and its safe zones was displayed in the video presentation Wednesday evening, all information pertaining to this year’s game can be found at game.savzombies.com.
