“Move over Paris”

By Myrriah Gosset

The 2009 SCAD fashion show kicked off at 4 p.m. May 16 with the student showcase along with the presentation of the Golden Scissor award.

Opening the show was a acrobatic dance piece choreographed by performing arts professor Vincent Brosseau. The students who performed were Brian Delvacchio, Bradley Dorismond, Marissa Jeffcoat, Ezra Lovesky, Amanda Mallonee, Ceila Murawski and Blake Smith along with alumni Julio Penagos.

The stage was set with ladders across the stage, which also provided a backdrop for the show and also functioned as props for the models to pose with as they made their way across the runway.

Michael Fink, a fashion director started the show stating that, “New York and Paris better move over because today, Savannah is the capitol of the fashion world.”

Fink then presented fourth year fashion major Kate Hundley with the Golden Scissors award. This award has been given out every year since 2005 to the student who best exemplifies the best in design and craftsmanship.

Fink was this year’s guest judge and was pleased to award Hundley with the Golden Scissors.

The show opened with children’s fashion and then transitioned into a mix of both men’s and women’s wear. The range went from daywear to eveningwear; the everyday to the avant garde.

The Style Lab mentor program showcases were also shown for both Lars Nilsson and Yigal Azrouel.

“I was quite impressed with the level of design,” art history professor Fred Gross said after the show.

Most of the audience at the show seemed to be family and friends to the designers with lots of shout outs to parents going around the auditorium.

There was also a large portion of students at the show showing support for the culmination of SCAD Style.

The 8 p.m. show will include the presentation of the Andre Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award to Ruben and Isabel Toledo.

Expect more District coverage on the evening show along with the after party
and comments from student designers, celebrities and attendees alike.
