New year, new music

The first month of music in 2022 brought with it incredible, brand-new releases. Two albums in particular created the most buzz within the industry: FKA Twigs’ “Caprisongs” and The Weeknd’s “Dawn FM.” Both albums are popular because of the rebirth they symbolize for the artist. Whether it’s with a new experimental sound or the turn of a page after a particularly bad era in life, FKA Twigs and The Weeknd came back to kick the year off right.

“Caprisongs” reminds me of the TV show, “Euphoria.” It would be saved on Maddy’s phone if she got over her toxic relationship with Nate. The overall mood is luxe and chill, with the beats and FKA Twigs’ vocals rolling over you like pink velvet. There are still themes of heartbreak and healing, but there is a cathartic, liberating tone throughout. It’s exactly what I expected for a Capricorn’s comeback after a break up and pandemic.

“Dawn FM” felt like I was going into space and the only radio station I could get was Abel’s. I wanted to put on my bell bottoms and kick-ball-change my way through the kitchen. It’s sultry, like almost anything The Weeknd does, but this album glitters with an experimental edge unlike anything I’ve ever heard from him. If we’re sticking to the astrology theme, The Weeknd holds up his signature Scorpio traits in his latest album. Intense honesty, reluctant obsession and a tendency to indulge in existential dread.

Both albums are available to listen to on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube Music and Pandora. Go take a listen!
