For their Civil War at 150 Historical Marker Project, the Georgia Historical Society was awarded the 2011 Award of Merit by the Leadership in History Awards of the American Association for State and Local History. Now in its 66th year, the AASLH Leadership in History Awards is the most prestigious recognition an organization can receive for the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.
As a part of the national celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Georgia Historical Society and other state and private agencies commissioned a series of new, repaired and replaced markers along original locations of Sherman’s March to the Sea. To capture the full spectrum of Georgia’s Civil War Experience, the new markers represent previously overlooked elements of the war including civilians, politics, industry, the home front, African Americans and women. The Georgia Historical Society also developed a website and iPhone app for users to design their own driving route to see markers, follows upcoming events or read original stories relating to the Civil War.
To experience the achievement right here in Savannah, nearby Civil War marker locations include: the Second African Baptist Church, St. John’s Church and Parish House, Old Fort Jackson, and the Fort Pulaski National Monument.
