On April 26, city and regional leaders will gather to celebrate completed expansion of Savannah’s Emergency Preemption System.
The system was expanded to include ambulances, police cruisers and fire engines. As emergency vehicles approach signalized intersections, traffic lights and crosswalk signals adjust, making passenger transport faster and safer. These adjustments also make streets safer for drivers and pedestrians.
At its onset in 2007, the Emergency Preemption technology was installed in 41 ambulances and at seven intersections along DeRenne Avenue. The recent expansion includes 147 more emergency vehicles and 73 more intersections along major corridors. Ambulances in Beaufort County have also been installed with the units for faster, safer transport to Savannah hospitals.
