News brief: Police identify one of three home invasion suspects

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department identified a suspect shot during a home invasion.

The suspect, identified as Kevin Dewitt Hubbard, 25, was one of three men who forced their way into a home on the 2200 block of Hawthorne Street on June 19.

The three cornered the 22 year-old cousin of the one of the house’s residents in the front yard and tried to rob him at gunpoint. When the cousin ran into the house, the suspects followed. One suspect pointed a gun at the cousin while another suspect entered a bedroom and tried to rob a 23 year-old woman sleeping with her two year-old son.

Upon hearing the altercation, the 28 year-old father of the infant opened fire on the intruders and chased them out of the house. One of the suspects dropped a handgun while leaving, so a fourth occupant of the house used it to also fire at the fleeing intruders.

Hubbard was found wounded in a vacant lot beside the house with a mask nearby. Initially, he refused to provide his name to police, but police were able to use fingerprints to identify him. He is recovering at Memorial University Medical Center.

Detectives from the SCMPD Violent Crimes Division are collaborating with the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office on charges against Hubbard as they try to identify others involved in the robbery.
