News brief: Police seek public’s aid in identifying thefts

There have been a growing number of thefts from yards. The thefts are stealing particularly air conditioning units from abandoned houses and bicycles. So far this year, 396 cases of theft from yards have been reported in comparison to 241 reported cases in 2010, showing a growth of 64 percent.

The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department cautioned citizens to watch for suspicious people, particularly around vacant houses and buildings. Look out for construction trucks without business markings, non-residents in lanes or repair workers out of uniform, especially around air-conditioners. Anyone noticing these should contact police immediately.

Bike owners should secure bikes with tubular steel locks rather than chains to metal items such as poles, not wooden items that can be broken. Maintain serial numbers of bicycles in case they are stolen. Recovered bikes cannot be directed back to owners without serial numbers or identifying marks. SCAD students can register their bike with SCAD Security at the SCAD Security office.
