Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police issued a warning yesterday for cyclists to remain extra vigilant when securing their bicycles.
In the nine-day period since classes resumed at SCAD, 14 bicycles were reported stolen—all but two of them locked with a chain or cable. Most bicycle thefts occurred between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.
The thieves are targeting racks set up at SCAD locations. The thieves are reaching over fences to hoist bikes, and even pulling up fence posts.
Bikes stolen from porches were reportedly made between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Police recommend the following steps for SCAD students, faculty and administrators who travel by bike:
- Record the serial numbers and detailed descriptions of their bicycles.
- Use tubular steel locks rather than chains or cables, if possible.
- Store bicycles in a building, where possible.
- Engraving owners’ drivers license numbers into the frames of the bicycles. (Take advantage of police bicycle registration and marking events, which are announced on District.)
- Consider writing your name, phone number, drivers license number or ID card number on a piece of tape and inserting it into the seat stem or handlebars. This provides quick identification should the bike be stolen and recovered.
If your bike is stolen, immediately contact SCAD Security at (912) 525-4500 and the SCMPD at (912) 651-6675.
