Savannah-Chatham Animal Control officers captured two pit bulls after the dogs attacked a group of children in an east Savannah park.
The children were playing in Treat Park on Treat Avenue around 8 p.m. on June 21 when the dogs entered the park and began nipping at and chasing the children. One dog pulled a 7-year-old boy off a swing and bit his face and legs. Bystanders used a brick to beat the dog unconscious so it would release the boy.
Neighbors chased off the other dog by throwing bricks and firing a gun at it. An Animal Control officer hit the dog with a tranquilizer, but the dog was not recovered until early in the morning on June 22.
The dogs wore collars but no identifying tags. The smaller dog was euthanized and sent to Chatham County Environmental Health to be checked for rabies, but the larger dog will be quarantined for 10 days.
After the attack, the 7-year-old was rushed to Memorial University Medical Center with serious facial wounds. Though the wounds are not life threatening, he is listed in critical condition.
