News Briefs for April 12: SCAD wins SunGard Higher Education award

SCAD

SCAD won the 2010 SunGard Higher Education Award for Institutional Performance for redesigning its academic processes, which improved dropping and adding courses, applying for internships, requesting transcripts and changing majors from a paper-based system to an online environment. The university will receive $10,000 for student aid and scholarships.

In another honor, SCAD secured the 10th spot in the Huffington Post’s list of Top 10 Hipster Schools in the United States.

National

The Arlington, Va.-based National Alliance on Mental Illness launched StrengthofUs.org. The site targets young adults, ages 18-25, who need support navigating challenges and opportunities before, during and after the college years. College students helped develop the online social network, which connects people with resources related to mental health issues, healthy relationships, family and friends, campus life, independent living, finances, employment and housing.  A launch party will take place April 21.

Local

The Savannah Music Festival will hold a free appreciation concert, April 15, 8:45 p.m., at the new Forsyth Park band shell. Bluegrass/Celtic artists Crooked Still will headline the first night time concert held in this venue. Concertgoers can bring their own food, beverage and seating. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the American Legion Post 135 ballroom.

The Savannah Chatham Metro Police Department will offer a free, eight-hour state-certified boating safety course open to the public every third Saturday of the month.  Participants will receive certification that can help reduce the costs of insurance.
