News briefs for April 7: District’s video places 10th with HuffPost readers

SCAD

After readers of the The Huffington Post cast 150,000 votes to determine their top policy question for Secretary of education Arne Duncan, SCAD came in 10th out of 14 video inquiries posed by college and university newspapers.

District was one of 65 universities within the HuffPost network asked to participate in the question-generating contest.

The editor of the newspaper with the winning question will be flown, courtesy of the HuffPost, to Washington, D.C. this week to participate in an interview with Duncan and President Barack Obama’s chief adviser on domestic policy, Melody Barnes

The interview will be streamed live on both the HuffPost and WhiteHouse.gov at 9:15 a.m. April 9.

The Savannah-Chatham County Metropolitan Planning Commission unanimously approved SCAD’s proposed expansion of student housing yesterday.

The proposed project includes new residence halls and apartment buildings on the west side of West Boundary Street near the Talmadge Bridge.

The site will accommodate more than 1,100 students at completion. Data for staged demolition and construction has not been announced.

That loud wail you heard at noon today was the monthly test of Chatham County’s Emergency Warning System.

The siren test lasted approximately three minutes, and was necessary to make sure the warning system is in good working order as the Southeastern coast moves into the wet season, which brings heavy rains, potential tornadoes and hurricanes to our shores.
