A Call for Help
The Chatham Savannah Animal Control Department issued a call for help today.
The facility at 7211 Sallie Mood Drive is over capacity with abandoned dogs and cats, creating dangerously low food levels and the threat of lethal action.
“We have about 70 animals we could euthanize,” reported the director of the facility, Lieutenant Brenda Boulware, “but I’d rather try and find them a home.”
Animal Control is accepting donations of cat and dog food at its facility, and it welcomes anyone qualified, who would like to adopt a pet.
Contact Animal Control at (912) 351-6750 to help.
The Chatham Savannah Animal Control reminds reminds pet owners that although Halloween is a time for fun, ghost , goblins, and plenty of sweets, it can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for your pets.
Protecting Pets from Goblins
Animal Control also recommends taking the following precautions, courtesy of ASPCA, to protect your pets from ghosts and goblins this Halloween weekend:
- Do not leave your pets out in the yard on Oct. 30, when most people in Savannah will celebrate Halloween, or on Halloween evening this Sunday. Each year, pet owners learn the hard way that vicious pranksters tease, injure, steal and even kill pets on this night.
- Chocolate is poisonous to many animals.
- Tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed.
- Be careful of pets around pumpkins lit with candles. Pets may knock them over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned.
- Don’t dress the dog in a costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it puts a lot of stress on the animal. If you do dress up your dog, make sure the costume isn’t constricting, annoying or unsafe.
- Be careful not to obstruct the dog’s vision; even the sweetest dogs can get snappy when their vision impaired.
- All but the most social dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours; too many strangers in strange garb can be scary for a dog.
- Be careful your cat or dog doesn’t dart out through an open door.
