North Korea conducts new nuclear test

Sticking close to his father’s policy of building up the state’s military deterrent to keep enemies at bay despite the international condemnation and use of sanctions, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, allowed for an underground nuclear test. Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations stated the the council “must and will deliver a swift, credible and strong response”, and the North Korea “does not and will not benefit from violating international law.” After the U.S. led strict sanctions on North Korea after their long-range missile test the Korean Central News Agency from the North stated that it was for their own protection from hostility. After Tuesday’s nuclear test the KCNA said, “This nuclear test is our first measure, which displayed our maximum restraint … If the U.S. continues with their hostility and complicates the situation, it would be inevitable to continuously conduct a stronger second or third measure.” The disturbance reported Tuesday had a 5.1 magnitude of seismic disturbance according to U.S. Geological Survey maps.

Savannah-Chatham police and Southside residents meet Monday night to discuss crime

Windsor hall was the venue of the concerned discussion on what is being done and going to be done about catching the perpetrators of crimes like Rebecca Foley or Evan Colquitt’s murders. There are many leads but no answers. Residents also brought up the issue of drug-related crimes being conducted in the area, gang activity, delayed police response, and requested that the officers talk more to the residents while patrolling. It is too early to see if the discussion had any impact, but at least the voices of locals have been heard by the authorities.
