Superstorm Sandy death toll reaches 39

Floods, high winds, deaths and destruction continues in the northeast. At least 39 people have been killed in the U.S. and Canada by Sandy since the storm made landfall Monday. Billions of dollars in relief funds have already been raised to go toward fixing the damage. According to CNN news at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, there are approximately 7.5 million people without power in 13 states. President Obama canceled campaign events on Tuesday and Wednesday and returned to the White House to fill his role as the hands-on commander of the federal response to this natural disaster. Governor Mitt Romney also canceled campaign events for Tuesday and has urged the American people to donate to the Red Cross, or to help in any way they can.

 

Coast Guard rescues a Savannah college student from HMS Bounty

Savannah college student Anna Sprague, 20, was rescued off the coast of North Carolina on Monday. The HMS Bounty battled 18-foot waves caused by Hurricane Sandy. The craft’s diesel engines died around 4 a.m. Monday. Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopters rescued Sprague and most of the other crewmembers. One crewmember is still missing.

 

Registered sex offenders in Effingham County are to spend Halloween in Sheriff’s office

About 45 sex offenders have been contacted to be in attendance at a conference room in the Sheriff’s office from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Sheriff’’s office spokesman David Ehsanipoor stated that they “want to give parents some piece of mind and reduce the chance of something bad happening.” The requirement of sex offenders reporting to the Sheriff’s office on Halloween has been practiced for several years. This year magazine, book, and computer privileges are being revoked from the offenders in the past they have been caught looking at pornography.
