Following in the footsteps of Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, Christina Aguilera’s singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the national anthem, is the talk of this year’s Super Bowl.
There is no arguing that being asked to sing the national anthem is an honor. Christina Aguilera’s flub of the lyrics, singing, “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming,” instead of “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” is unforgivable.
Some people may think, “Oh, give Christina a break,” while others were outraged by the flub. I find myself siding with those who are outraged. I can’t imagine how much money that she got paid for this performance, probably an ungodly amount, and I can’t believe that she messed up.
I am truly shocked. Who messes up the national anthem?
Granted, getting up and singing in front of thousands of people is no easy task. But, it’s her job. Most people are not allowed to slack on their job without facing serious consequences. I don’t see why Christina Aguilera should be treated differently.
Christina Aguilera was chosen to sing the national anthem because someone must have thought that she would do a good job. She failed. Personally, I wouldn’t have chosen her to sing, but no one asked me for my opinion.
Maybe someone will think twice before asking Aguilera to perform again. Maybe they should have chosen someone who has been slightly more popular this year to sing the national anthem. Even Justin Bieber would have gotten the National Anthem right.
And he’s Canadian.
