As New Bees have recently swarmed to the charming SCAD Savannah campus, their curiosity has grown with questions about navigating this new chapter of their life. While these questions may be new for the freshmen, upperclassmen once wondered about the same things. With help from select older bees, New Bees will have more insight about SCAD.
What is the best way to find ELOs?
ELO is an abbreviation for Extra Learning Opportunities. The best way to find ELOs is through your professor. Each professor may have a set guideline of what qualifies as an ELO. ELOs can include “Guest and Gusto,” tours of the SCAD Museum of Art or visiting SCAD Story. Attending ELOs is part of the final grade in some courses, while in other courses, they may qualify as extra credit.
Is SCADamp worth it?
SCADamp is here to help SCAD students prepare for professional presentations. Ally Miller-Henson, a second-year photography student, attended her first SCADamp workshop this summer, and she said, “It’s definitely worth it!” The SCADamp workshop she attended was focused on storytelling in a presentation. After the experience, she better understood how to keep an audience’s attention while presenting.
Can I eat at dining halls that are not at my residence hall?
“You can absolutely eat at other dining halls,” Ally said. You may become tired of the repetitive meals served at your dining hall, so it’s great to switch it up sometimes. One of SCAD’s best dining halls is Carnival at Montgomery House. This dining hall features Asian fusion cuisine.
Can I utilize academic buildings that are not associated with my major?
You can use academic buildings that are not associated with your major but with limits. Some buildings have areas for specific majors. Ally gave the example of the Adler Studio Lighting room. It is also best to ask for permission before touching equipment that seems major-specific.
What is the best way to make friends?
Jordan Ragsdale, a second-year graphic design student, said the best way to make friends is in class. “I met all my close friends in class! From there, you can hang with them and their friends,” she said.
According to Ally, making friends can be as simple as complimenting an outfit or speaking to those on the streets. “The ice-breaking stage can get awkward, but you’ll find that many people here are very similar to you. Try not to close yourself off from new friends!”
What are the best restaurants in Savannah?
Jordan recommends Flock to the Wok and Spanky’s when looking to enjoy a local Savannah restaurant. She said, “They are so amazing!”
Ally noted that her Savannah favorites include “Egg Roll King, which is a hidden gem! Foxy Loxy is my favorite for tacos and coffee. It’s a great place to study. Also, Gallery Espresso for their sandwiches and coffee!”
