Police prepare for coastal flooding

The National Weather Service in Charleston issued a flood warning for some parts coastal Georgia and South Carolina until 1 a.m. June 24. The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police has said that parts of Highway 80 may be shut down tonight due to the expected coastal flooding.

SCMPD is working closely with the Chatham Country Emergency Management Agency, Med Star and the Department of Transportation. Currently high tide is expected to peak at 9:00 p.m. Metro Police will be along Highway 80 between the Bull River Bridge and Fort Pulaksi monitoring the roadway.

The DOT will be standing by to clear Highway 80 of any debris left behind by the flooding, as items from the sea can be left on the highway as flood waters subside.

The National Weather service also says low lying areas near Wilmington, Burnside, and Talahi Islands will also experience flooding.
