Reader’s Theater connects writers, producers at S.P.A.C.E.

The Savannah’s Cultural Arts Theater will offer a new monthly program, Reader’s Theater, beginning this month. It will introduce aspiring playwrights to Savannah’s local theater community. A free concert-style reading of a new play will be held on the third Saturday of each month, from 1-3:30 p.m., in the Black Box at S.P.A.C.E. Each reading will be followed by an open discussion.

Writers are invited to submit plays to be considered for future readings. Local playwrights whose works have not been read before are preferred. The works playwrights submit could be considered for production in local theaters next season. Established plays will be read only if no local plays are available to be read.

The first session of the program is scheduled for Feb. 21 from 1-3:30 p.m., and will feature “The McCullogh Boys” by Ina Williams. The play follows the saga of a successful young photographer who learns that his father is dying and returns home to make peace with the family he left behind 10 years earlier.

Interested writers must e-mail their scripts to Performing Arts Coordinator Ellie Pyle at elizabeth_pyle@savannahga.gov. Individuals who would like to volunteer as readers should email a resume, headshot and availability to Pyle. Scripts must be submitted one month prior to the day they would be read.

The Black Box at S.P.A.C.E. is located at 9 W. Henry St. For more information call (912) 651-6783.
