Recession affects us all

This week District will begin long-term coverage of the economic woes we face as students and a nation. We’ll focus on the job market SCAD students graduating this year will enter, and we’ll check in on students already in the job market to see how they’re faring. Additionally we’ll explore tuition rates, admission rates, student loans and other areas of the economy that affect students’ lives.

Savannah, it seems, has largely escaped the recession. The port with its constant flow of goods provides steady jobs. It also attracts companies to Savannah that want to be near a shipping point. A port will be constructed in Jasper County on the S.C. side of the Savannah River that will bring additional jobs, and interest to the area. DIRTT, a Canadian design company may be moving to Savannah soon, and is specifically interested in SCAD students.

One of our first stories will highlight the more than $350 million SCAD brings to the communities it works in.

As college students we often hear the same trite slogans and advice. We hope to dispel many of those. We’re interested in what you have to say, comment below and tell us how you think the economy is going, and if you’re worried about getting a job upon graduation.
