Review: “Soon is So Far Away”

By Adeshola Adigun

“Soon is So Far Away” is fourth-year sound design major Sean Carter’s instrumental album/beat tape. This mid-2009 release blends the essences of hip-hop beats with spacey sounds and various samples.

Sean’s choice in samples and sounds validates his production skills. The album fluctuates between mellow/jazzy, loopy/trance-like and upbeat/loud making it relevant in different atmospheres.

Although “Soon is So Far Away” is a 15-track instrumental album, the track “High Times (Wrap),” featuring Pancho Villa and Wallace Alamo, features a humorous freestyle from the two unnamed fellow SCAD students.

Other glimpses of humor come in on “A Genie’s Last Wish,” which starts with an audio clip from an episode of “Martin” when Brother Man nonchalantly returns a CD player he borrowed from Martin without permission.

Overall, the album makes for good sounds to vibe to or some beats to rap over with your friends. Kick back with Unda as he takes “your brain on space walks” for this euphoric journey.
