On July 12 and July 26, the Savannah City Council convened to discuss an array of topics ranging from the removal of the I-16 flyover to creating community gardens in empty lots around the city.
According to the city, there are roughly 1,300 vacant properties dotting the map of downtown, a number of them in dire need of a little tender loving care.
“There are 93 properties available for this gardening effort,” said Dr. Estella Shabazz, alderman for the sixth district. “It really does put properties to good use.”
Other members of council, who wanted to be sure that if in fact these gardens were begun that they would be maintained, voiced concerns and questions.
“When we create these community gardens, we need to monitor them so that we’re sure they look great,” said Alderman John Hall of District 3.
All members of council agreed that the I-16 flyover, located at MLK Jr. Blvd. and Montgomery Street, should indeed be removed. The project is included on a list of nine definite projects that are to be funded by the T-SPLOST tax if it is passed on July 31.
Council also echoed approval of the proposed T-SPLOST tax, Alderman Mary Osborne, vice-chairman of council and representative of District 2, even going on to say “Please vote yes.”
The Savannah City Council will reconvene for public forum on August 6, 2012 at 2 p.m. Meetings are held at City Hall.
